THREAD PACKAGE OR HOLDER.
T 0 all 20 from "it, may concern Be it known that I, REGINALD REYNOLDS,
a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Riverside, Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Thread Package or Holder, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to an improved means for packaging thread. It is particularly intended for thread, yarn, silk or the like in short length strands. The term thread will be used herein for convenience as applying to either yarn, silk, leather or other similar strands of any length.
The main'object is to provide a simple andinexpensive form of package in which thread in short length strands may be sold and from which package individual lengths of thread may be readily withdrawn, one at a time, without tangling or knotting the remaining strands.
In its preferred form the" bundle, or bunch, or group of threads istolded at or near its middle or central portion and wrapped with a paper wrapper. This wrapper has a body portion and a locking portion, or neck, formed by notching or otherwise cutting. one edge or both edges of the blank. Three forms of blanks are illustrated and the packages into which they are formed, but. it should be understood" that I do not consider the invention as limited to the use of these particular blanks.
Figure'l, is a side view of one form of package embodying my invention.
Fig. 2, is a cross section on the plane of the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3, is a cross section on the plane of the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 1, is across section of modified form of package taken on a plane corresponding to the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. f
Fig. 5, shows the blank .with the thread locked and ready to be wrapped.
Fig. 6, is a side view showing a package formed from another blankin some respects.
Fig. 7, is a side view of another form similar to Fig. 6.
Fig. 8, shows a blank similar to the blanks used to form the package of Fig. 6.
Fig. 9, is a cross section of the package of Fig. 7 taken on the plane of the'line 99.
Fig. 10 is a fragmentary view of the blank forming the right hand end of the package 7 shown in Fig. 7.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pgttqgntgd A r. 19 1921 Application filed October 13, 1919. Serial No. 330,253.
The group or bundleot' threads is folded or looped at 10 and has the free ends 11, 11. The strands may be laid parallel or somewhat twisted.
. edges 17 and 18 may be overlapped as shown in Fig. 2 and be secured together if desired. In the form shown in Figs. l and 2 it will be seen that the central part of the bundle of threads is entirely inclosedby the wrapper, whereas adjacent the looped end only one-half of the bundle is embraced by the wrapper leaving an exposed portion 19.
It is clear that the blank, or wrapper, requlred for this form of package may be made at small cost and the thread can be readily wrapped, either by'hand or by machinery at small expense. The threads are so held in the package that each individual thread may be withdrawn from either end of the package without tangling or knot-ting the remaining threads. 'The package is so formed that the threads are displayed at the opposite ends of the package in an attractive manner and so that the color and character of the threads will be apparent even to the most superficial examination.
' Instead of wrapping the edge 17 outside of the edge 18 as shown at Figs. 1 and 2, it may be wrapped inside as shown at 17 in the cross section of Fig. 4, where the edge .18 is made longer and extended so that its part 18 entirelyv incloses the looped portion'l9 of the thread. mentioned forms of package obviously may bear advertising, descriptive or ornamental matter. V
The package of Fig. 6 is formed from a blank such as shown in Fig. 8 having a body portion 20 wrapped around the central portion of the bundle of threads and a locking portion or neck 21-for the folded or looped portion of the thread. Obviously the edges of the body of the blank may be suitably secured together. If desired ears, such as 23, 23 may be provided, as by notching the blank at 22, to assist in holding the thread Both of the above 1 when drawing the thread from the package at that end.
As a further modification the head portion 24 of the wrapper may be bent or f0lded'back as shown in Fig. 7 and the ears 23, 23 folded around to the opposite side and secured together or to the body of the package as indicated in Fig. 9. This makes a very secure package and leaves the thread exposed in an attractive manner and facilitates the drawing out of the individual threads, when desired.
The package may be more or less flat as shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 9 if desired, and the opposite sides may be secured together for instance by a staple, stitch or other has tening device as indicated at 25. It will be understood that other modifications may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention.
The head 2% may be continued as at 26 in the form of a strip covering'the edge of the body as in Fig. 7.
'Another head 27 similar to head 24 may be provided at the end opposite head 24. This head 27 may be integral with that end of the body and have ears '28 bent over exactly like head 24 at the left of Fig. 7 so as to hold the ends 11 of the thread separated or it may be integral with the end of strip26, the ears 28 serving to hold the parts in place.
' The invention is particularly adapted to the sale of needle lengths of thread, and packages of dental floss.
I claim 1. A thread package comprising a wrap per having a notch in one longitudinal edge for dividing said wrapper into a body por tion and a locking neck, and a bundle of threads folded intermediate its ends and looped around said locking neck with half of said folded bundle passing through said notch, said body portion being folded to inclcse a portion of the folded bundle intermediate its ends, the portion of said wrapper adjacent the notch and locking neck being folded on and secured to said body portion. g
2. A thread package comprising, a paper wrapper with a notch in one edge dividing the wrapper into a body portion and a looking neck and a bundle of threads folded in the middle and having one-half looped through said notch and around said neck and the central portion of each half of,the bundle embraced by said body portion and leaving a portion of said bundle adjacent the fold exposed, whereby any thread can be withdrawn from either end.
3. A thread package comprising, a wrapper formed with open notches in opposite side edges forming a body andv a neck with ears, and a bundle of threads folded in the middle and looped around said neck and embraced by the body of said wrapper, said neck being folded over the end of said package and said ears wrapped about said pack age, whereby individual threads may be readily withdrawn. r
4. A thread package comprising, a wrapper having notches in opposite side edges forn'iing a body and head with a smaller connecting locking neck and a'bundle of threads looped around said neck, said head being folded back around the overlapping of the body and having ears embrac ing the opposite side of the body.
A package comprising a folded bunch of threads, a body wrapped around the threads leaving the folded loop and the free ends exposed, and heads at opposite ends of the body for dividing the threads into two bunches having ears folded around the
