MARIE, MICHIGAN.
SANITARY ICE-CREAM CONE.
Specification of Letters I Patent.
Patented May 20, 11919.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN A. THORNTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sault Ste. Marie, in the county of Chippewa and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Ice-Cream Cones; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to confectioneries and pastry and particularly to ice cream cones.
It is one of the important objects of the present invention to provide for the most sanitary handling and sale of the ordinary ice cream cones, now so extensively sold, thereby eliminating or materially reducing the soiling or contamination of the edible cone of pastry, in which the ice cream is placed when the article is offered for sale. It is another and important object of the present invention to provide a simple, practicable, inexpensive wrapper or shield for cones, and further, it is an object to provide for the ready removal of the same, and further, it is an object of the invention to provide a sanitary shield, or guard, which may be utilized as an advertising device, as well as a sanitary guard.
With these, and other objects in view as will appear from the following specification, relative to the embodiment of the invention shown in the accompanying drawing, the invention consists of the whole, the construction and the combination as more fully hereinafter described. In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1, is a perspective view of the cone and sanitary wrapper, each partly broken away and Fig. 2, is a transverse section, showing the arrangement of the severing means. Fig. 3 is a perspective of a longitudinally plaited wrapper.
The pastry cones which are designed to be filled or partly filled with ice cream, are from the time they are manufactured until eventually placed in the hands of an individual consumer, passed through many bare hands with the consequent danger of being soiled thereby, and possibly resulting in the transference of disease, because of this unsanitary condition, in which the article is handled. Therefore, my present invention edge of the cone and whereby the accidentally slipping off of the wrapper is prevented, and also this flange forms a seat, protecting the edge of the cone from the next nested cone, which is inserted therein, to facilitate packing of the articles.
The wrapper 2, may be manufactured in any suitable manner and of the desired form, it being shown in the present case as having its longitudinal edges overlapped as in Fig. 2, and its outer overlapping edge 4:, as preferably provided with a short tongue or finger piece 5, which may be gripped and pulled to facilitate the removal of the wrapper from the cone C.
The lower end of the cone may be closed either by being tightly twisted as in 6, or in. any other suitable manner.
' If desired, a tearing thread 7, may be laid along the body of the cone from its top edge to the lower end and as here shown this thread is disposed on the inner face of the inner lap (Fig. 2) theend of the thread be- '90 mg brought through and attached to the pulling tongue 5, to facilitate the tearing ofl of the wrapper.
In Fig. 3, the upper end of the wrapper'is shown as fluted or crimped at 10.
Obviously the flange 3, shown in Fig; 1, may not be laid over the edge of the cone, but may be simply flattened back upon the adjacent portion of th cone, and will in this matter, serve as a reinforcement for the open end of the cone.
What is claimed is:
1. A sanitary wrapper for pastry, ice
cream cones,"comprising a conical receiver for the cone made of sheet material having its upper and larger end plaited r inwardly folded.
2. A sanitary wrapper for pastry, ice cream cones, comprising a. conical receiver i moaeio for the cone made of sheet material having its upper and larger end plaited or inwardly folded, a portion of the doubled body overlapping and extending down on the inside 5 of the cone.
3. A sanitary wrapper for pastry, ice cream cones, comprising a conical receiver for the cone made of sheet material having its upper and larger end plaited or inwardly folded, the inwardly folded plait forming a 10 seat for an inserted cone.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JOHN A. THORNTON.
