HANDLE FOR PACKAGES.
' (Application filed Mar. 22, 1898.)

\A/ITNEEEEEI- UMTED AUGUSTUS IV. OTTIGNON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
HANDLE FOR PACKAGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,936, dated July 5, 1898. Application filed March 22, 1898. Serial No. 674,842. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS WV. OTTIG- NON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Handles for Packages,of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its objects to simplify and improve the construction of handles for bundles or packages and to dispense with the wire hooks hitherto provided for engaging the cord with which said bundles or packages are tied up. These objects I attain by the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved handle attached to a package. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan of'the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an enlarged plan of one end of the handle, showing its slot and the package-tying cord within the same. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal vertical section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5.
In the drawings, A represents a package-handle consisting of a strip of thin material, preferably leatheroid or other suitable fibrous material possessing lightness and strength; but, if desired, the handle may be composed of sheet metal or other material adapted for the purpose. This strip, which is shaped by means of dies or in any other suitable manner, is of concavo-convex form in cross-section and is curved in the direction of its length to enable it to fit the hand comfortably while carrying the package to which it is at tached, the handle being thus arched, both longitudinally and transversely, to combine strength with lightness.
At each end of the handle A is an inclined open-ended slot 1), of the form shown in Figs. 1, 2, 4, and 5, for the reception of the tyingcord 0 of a package or bundle when the handle is to be attached thereto by catching onto said cord, as shown in Fig. 1. The open ends of the slots 1) are preferably located on opposite sides or edges of thehandle,as shown but they may both be on the same side, if desired. Each slot is preferably so cut as to form ator near its inner end a longitudinallyextending clamping-tongue 10, the transverse edge at the free end of which lies close to the opposite transverse side 12 of the slot, so that as the cord is entered in the operation of engaging the handle therewith it will force the tongue upward, as shown in Fig. 6, the resiliency of said tongue, due to the nature of the material of which the handle is composed, causing it to exert a yielding, biting, or clamping pressure upon the cord sufficient to pre-- vent the handle from slippin glen gthwise upon the cord and avoiding the necessity of turning the handle around to produce a twist of the cord, as is necessary with the handles provided with wire hooks now in common use.
If preferred, one only of the slots Z) may be provided with a friction-tongue, which may be found sufficient to prevent the handle from slipping on the cord.
The above-described handle is of ornamental shape, and being made of a single piece without separate hooks can be furnished at a trifling cost, while the slots, one or both provided with a biting or clamping tongue, enable it to be more easily and quickly hooked onto a package without liability of slip than is the case with the ordinary wooden handle provided at its opposite ends with wire hooks.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, a package handle formed of a strip provided at its ends with open slots forming at their inner portions longitudinally-extending, resilient, clamping-tongues having transverse free ends operating in connection with the opposed transverse wall of the slots to bite or clamp the cord to prevent slipping of the handle, substantially as described.
\Vitness my hand this 17th day of March, A. D. 1898.
AUGUSTUS W. OTTIGNON.
