Description
June 26, E923. 1,46Ufl57 W. C. J. EISEN HANDLE Filed Jan. 20, 1922 Patented June 26, 1923.
HANDLE.
Application filed January 20, 1922. Serial No. 530,555.
To all whom z'tmay concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. J. EISEN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Jersey City, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain' new and useful Improvements in Handles, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to handles for carrying parcels or packages tied by a string or the like.
The handle as at present-used consists of a hollow rod with a U-shaped wire passed through it and the ends of which are hooked shaped to engage the string. Such handles which, as well known, are given away free to purchasers by the stores, are comparatively inexpensive owing to the material and the cost of'manufacture. Apart from that,
it often entails a loss of time in attaching the handle to the string, as the string has to be twisted around the hooks in order to prevgfnt the'handle from shifting or slipping o 26 The object of my invention is to provide a construction which will obviate these drawbacks.
In the accompan ing drawing in which similar reference c aracters denote corre- 30 sponding parts, Fig. 1 is a plan view of a package tied with a string to which my new handle is ap lied; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the hand e; Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof partly in section and Flg. 4 is a cross section on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
1n the drawin a denotes a package which is tied around y a string b. The handle consists of a rod 10, preferably of circular cross section, which is provided with a central circular bore 10 and a. channel or groove 11 in the circumference terminating in said bore. Both the bore and groove extend throughout the entire length of the rod. At an intermediate point of the groove 11 a laterally extending cross groove 12 of elliptical or other suitable shape may be rovided to engage the cross part of the string.
In use the handle 15 is inserted between the string and package and the string is slipped through the groove 11 into the bore 10 of the rod. In case the string is tied crosswise around the parcel (as shown in Fig. 1), the rod canbe so positioned that its groove 12 will engage the string at the crossing (as at 6), whereby the rod will be held against shifting.
This contrivance because of its simplicity of construction considerably reduces the cost of manufacture. and material, and has the additional advantage that it can be easily and quickly applied to and removed from the package.
As material, either wood or the like or a suitable composition may be used.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is a 1. A detachable handle for parcels or packages tied by a string or the like, comprising a rod having a groove in the circumference extending throughout the entire length thereof and serving to engage the string.
2. A detachable handle for parcels lor packages tied by a string or the like, a rod having a groove in the circumference ex-v tending throughout the entire length thereof and an intermediate crossgroove for the engagement of said string.
3. A detachable handle for parcels or packagestied by a string or the like, comrising a rod having a central bore, a groove in the circumference terminating in said bore and extending throughout the length of said rod and an intermediate cross groove in said first groove, for the purpose de- 85 scribeda WILLIAM C. J. EISEN.
