Be it known that I, CI-LUILES ll". liaisoniune. a citizen of the United States. residing at Chicago, in the county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented certain ne and useful Improvements in Brick-Chunps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to brick clamps. and has for its object to provide a clamp of simple structure which includes a longitudinally extensible member and a lever pivoted thereto.-the lever being of such configuration that its work engaging end is capable of describing an extensive are so. that the bricks may be clamped by the said lever without necessitating frequent adjustment of the same.
The extensible member is made up of telescopic sections with means for holding them in adjusted positions. One of these sections is provided with a handle and a spatula end disposed at an angle to the body portion of the section. The other section receives the first mentioned section and the securing device is mounted upon the last. mentioned section. The lever is fulcrumed to the last mentioned section and is pro ided with a plurality of work engaging ends spaced from each other. The working end of the said lever is angular in side elevation so that the said working end may describe a maximum are when the lever is swung, thus rendering it possible to clamp the bricks without requiring frequent adjustment.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the brick clamp; Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the same; Fig. 3 is a view of one end of the same; Fig. at is an edge view of a lever used upon the clamp showing the same detached. Fig. is a perspective view of a lever mech anism used upon the clamp.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.
The brick clamp includes a longitudinally extensible member composed of a tubular section 1 and a section 2 which is adapted to telescopically move within the section 1. The section 2 is provided with a series of perforations 3 and at one end is provided l with an angular-1y disposed extremity 4t angular-l v disposed extremity t 'l he member 1 is provided at its side with which is of general spatularconfiguration ears (5 on which is pivoted a lever T. A pin 8 is pivoted to one end of the lever and passes through the sides of the section 1 and is also adapted to pass through one of the perforations 3 whereby the section 2 held in an adjusted position with relation to the section 1. A wire spring 9 is interposed between the side of the section 1 and one end of the lever 7. The said spring is provided with coils 10 which are wound around the pivot that secures the lever 7 to the lugs (3. This spring 9 is under tension with a tendency to hold the opposite end of the lever from that with which it is in en gagement toward the side of the section 1. T hat end of the section 1 remote from the end thereof which receives the section 2 is cut away at its upper and lower sides and the material at its lateral side forms lugs 11 between which is pivoted a lever 12. The lever 12 is provided at one end with a handle grip 13. nl rom the said handle grip 13 the portion ll of the lever 12 is inclined at an acute angle to that part upon which the handle grip is mounted. -and near the outer extremity of the portion 15tl1e lever is provided with a rivet 16 which passes through the opposite side portions of the lever and prevents the upper portions of the branches thereof from spreadin From the portion lithe working end of the lever is extended down in two branches 17 which in side elevation'aredisposed approxii'nately at a right angle to the portion 15 of the lever. The lower ends of the branches 17 are spaced from each other and are provided at their lower extremities with inwardly disposed lugs 18.
In operation; a row of bricks may he placed on edge and in close proximity to each other. The extremity 4 1s slipped down -along the side of one end brick and the branches 17 of the lever 12 are passed down along the outer side of the brick at the other end of the row.) Then by swinging the lever 12 the lugs 18 will force the bricks close together and clamp them between. the section brick which is in contact with the extremity t of the section, 2. Then by using the handle grip 13 and the handle 5 the bricks may be lifted and carried to any desired point, Where they may be deposited upon edge by swinging the lever 12 so that the lugs 18 of the branches 1? are moved away from the end brick.
The inner end of the section 2 is chainfered as at 19 and consequently when the device is not in'use the section 2 may be moved within the section 1' until the chemfered end 19 comes against the edge of the lever 12. The section 2 is then secured with relation to the section 1 by means of the pm ,8 and the lever 7 and inasmuch as the 1 chzunfeied end 19 is against the edge of the lever 12 the said lever cannot swing, and
therefore the clamp may be readily carriedfrom point to point or may be packed in a, chest or box for transportation without danger ofthe lever 12 swinglng end heee-new coining tangled with other tools or eppliances.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A brick clamp comprising; a hollowsection, a lever hilt-ruined to the hollow section in the vicinity of one end thereof and between the sides thereof, a, section slidably mounted in the hollow section and having :1- ehaintered end adapted to engege the lever and hold the same against swinging movement, and means for holding the sections in an adjusted position.
