EDSON A. SMITH, OF WATEELOO, IOWA.
FENCE-TIE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDSON A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vaterloo, in the county of Blackhawk, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F ence-Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wire fence ties.
The principal object of the invention is to so improve the construction of wire fence ties that it will be unnecessary to wrap the ends around each other to form a knot in the usual manner.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a novel form of holding means for such a tie.
Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in general of a wire fence tie provided with a novel arrangement of securing means.
The invention further consists in certain novel arrangements of the details of a fence tie hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and
Figure 1 is a view of one side of a fence tie constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the opposite side. Fig. 3 is an edge view thereof.
The numeral 10 indicates one of the line wires of a wire fence and the numeral 11 a cross wire.
The fence tie proper consists of a substantially circular body portion as indicated at 12. This body portion extends over the wire 10 and under the wire 11 at both sides of the wire 10 coming up again above the wire 10 at its ends. One end of this body portion extends across the wire 10 and is provided with an inwardly disposed rebent end 18. The other end of the body portion extends above the wire 10 being held by the means of the rebent extremity 13. From this point it runs across an arc of the body portion and is provided with an extremity Specification of Letters Patent.

14 bent in the opposite direction to the rebent extremity 13. It will be observed by this construction that it is rendered unnecessary to insert the end 14 in the loop to form the usual single knot.
In the application of the device the fence tie may be constructed with the end adjacent the extremity 14c tangentially arranged as indicated by the dotted line in Fig. 1, to the body 12. The tie may then readily be applied to the line and cross wire and the end adjacent the extremity 14L swung around to snap into the loop of the rebent portion 13 and engage over the outside of the body 12.
There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
1. A wire fence tie consisting of a portion of wire bent in substantially circular form to engage the fence wires, one end of said tie extending over one of the fence wires and terminating in an inwardly disposed right angular rebent extremity, and the other end engaged by the rebent extremity, extending over an arc of the circular portion, termi-' nating in an extremity bent over the outside of the circular portion in a direction opposite the first mentioned end.
2. A combination with a line wire and a tie wire; of a wire fence tie consisting of a portion of wire bent in substantially circular form lying over the line wire and under the tie wire on each side of said line wire, one end of said tie extending over the line wire and terminating in an inwardly disposed right angular rebent extremity, and the other end of said tie engaged by the rebent extremity, extending over said line wire and an arc of the circular portion of the tie and terminating in an extremity bent over the outside of the circular portion in a direction opposite the first mentioned end.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
H. B. Bonus, ARTHUR EDWARDS.
