JACOB I. BRORBY, OF SHENANDOAH, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 JAMES J. DUTY,
' OF SHENANDOAH, IOWA.
PACKAGE-TIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 23, 191%.
Application filed September 26, 1917. Serial No. 193,287.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB I. BRoneY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shenandoah, in the county of Page and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to package ties and more particularly that type comprising a fastening member and cord adapted for use in tying packages of letters or the like.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a simple and practical tie of the above general character having few parts which may be easily assembled. A further object is to provide a tie member which may be easily and inexpensively made from sheet metal or wire.
Uther objects will be in part obvious from the annexed drawings and in part indicated in connection therewith by the following analysis of this invention.
This invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of parts and in the unique relations of the members and in the relative proportioning and disposition. thereof, all as more completely outlined herein.
To enable others skilled in the art so fully to comprehend the underlying features thereof that they may embody the same by the numerous modifications in structure and relation contemplated by this invention, drawings depicting a preferred form have been annexed as a part of this disclosure, and in such drawings, like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout all the views, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view showing the device in operative position;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a detailed perspective view of the sheet metal portion of the tie.
Fi 4 shows a modification.
Referring now to the drawing in detail and more particularly to 1. 5 denotes a package or bundle about which the tie is adapted to be secured. This tie comprises a sheet metal member 6 and a cord 7 permanently attached thereto by passing and tying through a hole 8 in one arm or proiection 10. At each side of this projection 10 are arms 11 and 12 having upturned end portions 13, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3.
The arms 11 and 12 are spaced apart from the longer arm 10 a sufficient distance to permit the cord 7 to be woven in and out therebetween as hereinafter explained. The body member 6 is also providedwith a hole 14k at any convenient point whereby the device may be suspended together with a plurality of others upon a hook previous to use.
In operation the member 6 is centrally disposed upon the package and the cord 7 passed longitudinally thereabout, thence under the arm 11, a second time around the package if necessary, back under the arm 12 over the arm 10 and under the arm 11 after which a half hitch is taken about the arm 12 as shown. With this manner of tying, the cord acts longitudinally upon the memher 6 almost coincident with the longitudinal axis thereof whereby a turning move ment is prevented and thence equally upon each of the arms 11 and 12 prior to its final tying.
It is believed from the above that the construction and method of use and operation of this device will be clear to those familiar with the art. The invention is of simple and practical construction, inexpensive to manufacture and adapted to accomplish,
. among others, all of the objects hereinafter set forth.
In Fig. 4 there is shown a slight modification in which the tie is made of wire having substantially the same configuration as the sheet metal form. It may be used in the same Way and possesses the same advantages.
I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not intend to limit myself to the specific form shown and described.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A package tie comprising a body member having three substantially parallel arms in line with the body member, and a cord adapted to be permanently connected directly with the end of one of said arms.
2. A. package tie comprising a sheet metal body member having three substantially parallel arms one of which is longer than the others, a cord adapted to be connected with said longer arm, and secured about the other two arms after having passed longitudinally and transversely about the package.
3. A package tie comprising a relatively fiat elongated body member having three substantially parallel arms, the central one of Which is longer than the side arms, and a cord adapted to be permanently attached to said elongatedcentral arm and coacting With the side arms after having been passed longitudinally-and vertically about the package, said body member having a hole therein whereby the device may be conveniently suspended when not in use.
4. A package tie comprising a body mem- C ogiem of t i Patent may be obtained for her having three substantially parallel arms in line With the body member and a cord adapted to be connected at one end directly to one end of one of said arms and having its other end temporarily connected with the others after being wound around the package.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
