Description

s. w. STOUT v PACKAGE TIE Filed April 18, 1.9227
/KWT v I comprises a novel construction of a body Patented Mar. 4;, 192%.
GEORGE W. STOUT, 0F MERCHANTVILLE, NEW JERSEY.
PACKAGE TIE.
Application filed April 18, 1922. Serial No. 555,107.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. STOUT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Merchantville, in the county of Camden, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Package Tie, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to package ties, and
portion having a nearly closed eye therein located on about the median line of the body and internal recesses of a novel construction collocated with a side recess, said eye being provided with a tying cord of such dimen-- sions in cross-section as to completely fill said eye, so that it cannot be'laterally pulled therefrom, the ends of said tying cord being each provided with a head of cement o-r'the like of such area that the'tying cord cannot [vided at about its median line with an eye 2 be drawn through said eye at either end thereof, whereby a concrete unitary structure is produced, comprising the tie body and the cord provided with the cemented ends or heads, which cannot be disconnected therefrom.
By my novel construction, a novel, concrete, unitary structureis provided wherein the cord and tie are inseparable and which can be reused almost indefinitely, since after one end of the cord beginsto show any'indication of appreciable'wear from the efi'ects of the repeated tyingoperations, it is only necessary to sever the knot above the plate and pull the cord through the body of the plate which reverses the cord, thereby positioning the worn portion of the'cord, so'
there will beno wear from the tying operation placed upon it, thereby practically redoubling the life of the device.
To the above ends, my invention consists of a novel construction of a package tie and tying cord inseparable therefrom, comprising the novel features of utility and advantage hereinafter set forth.
For the purpose of illustrating my inven-' tion, I have shown in the accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which myinvention consists may be variously arrangedand organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
as being Snnilar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
. Referring to the drawings In carrying out my invention, I employ a plate or'body 1, which maybe composed of vulcanized fibre, thin sheet metal or any other suitablematerial, andwhich: is prointo which leads the converging walls 3 and 4, whereby a tapering throat is formed for the purpose of instantly assembling the cord to the plate without putting the device but of commission for repair, terminating in the opening 5, which is of such dimensions that the cord 6 'while freely movable longitudinally in said opening, cannot be pulled laterally through said opening,
' 6, and '7 designate inclined walls which enter the body of the tieobliquelyto the walls 3 and 4, said wall '6 merging into the curved wall 8, which is continued to form the inclined wall 9, which meets the inclined wall 10 at the apex 11, this apex 11 being to one side of -the median line of-the tie "and out of alignmentwith the eye 2, whereby an oblique slot 15 is formed which terminates in the opening 16.
12 designates a recess or shoulder on the side of the tie body, which is located intermediately of the apex 11 andthe eye2. The tying cord 6 is provided at each end with the heads 13 and 14, which are preferably made of cement or similar material, which is impervious to heat or moisture, and I desire to call special attention to the fact that the dimensions of the cord 6 are such that while it can be pulled through the eye 2, it fits suf- I ficiently snugly in said eye so that it can not be withdrawn laterally therefrom through 1 vised a novel and useful package tie which 1 V embodies the features of advantage enumer-' r ated as desirable inthe statement of the in- In the application or use of my invention, the body or plate 1 is placed flat on the merchandise to be tied and the end of the cord carrying the head 14 is pulled through the oblique slot into the position seen in Fig ure 4 and'a pull exerted thereon until the head 13 assumes the position seen in Figures 1, 2'and 5. The cord is then pulled tightly and the extremity carrying the head 14 is then switched fiat on the plate around into the recess 12 into the second position seen in Figure 5. The free end of the cord is then passed down under the plate up again into the oblique slot 15 and pulled until the parts assume the last or final position seen in Figure 1, in which position the cord will be locked. 1
v To unlock or untie the device, it is only 7 K necessary to'draw the free end of the cord containing the head 14 down into the oblique slot between the walls 6 and 7 and then exert a pull thereon. 7
My device is of great utility, since it is capable of're-use to an almost indefinite extent, thereby effecting a great saving in twine or cord, and in addition, when one end be- 'comes'worn from the'repeated tying opera- 7 tions, the other end can be used, so that the V life of the 13 and 14 are preferably of cement or similar material impervious to heat or moisture,
and if desired a knot may be'ti'ed in each end before the application of cement thereto. 7
It will now be apparent that I have devention and the above description, and
while I have in the present instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which will give in practice satisfac- 1 'tory and reliable'results, it is to be-under- 7 stood that the same is susceptible of modification various particulars without dedevice'is redoubled. The heads parting from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
'Having thus described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is y I V 1. A package tie, comprising a tie body having an oblique slot entering one edge thereof and terminating near the middle of V said body in converging walls, which extend at an angle to said slot and meet at, an
apex located out of alignment with said slot,
and an inclined passage formed'by converging sidewalls merging: into said oblique slot and terminating in an eye located on substantially the median line of said body, the
of disengagement from the tie body in a lat-,
eral or longitudinal direction and forms a unitary structure therewith.
2. The combination of a tie body having an opening in theside thereof terminating V in converging walls merging into an eye of considerably greater area than the constricted throat leading thereto, a tying cord passing through said eye and ofsuch size as to but incapable of lateral disengagement therefrom, and an enlarged cemented knot on each end of said cord, whereby saidcord cannot be laterally or longitudinally disengagedr from sald' eye or body and forms a unitary structure therewith.
