Description

(No Modem -J. WHITE. -Bale Tie. No. 235,973,. Patented Dec. 28,1880.
NPETERS,-PHOT0-LITNOGRAPHER WASi-NNGTON. D. C,
NITED STATES PATENT JOSEPH WHITE, 0E cLEvELAND, OHIO.
BALE-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,973, dated December 28, 1880,
' ApplicationfiledNovember29, 1880. (Nomodeh) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osEPH WHITE, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bale-Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the aecompanyingdrawin gs, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to bale-ties; and it consists ,in an improvement in construction upon the type of bale-tie referred to in Letters Patent No. 161,819, granted April 6, 1875, to John WV. Philp.
My invention has for its special object such a construction of the hook portion of the tie as will prevent the backward displacement of the keeper from the immediate vicinity of the hook. v
In, the drawings, Figure 1 represents my bale-tie in plan view; Fig. 2, the same in side elevation.
A is a loop terminating one end of the baleband. B is a hook terminating the other end of said band. The loop and hook A B are designed to engage with each other, as indicated in the drawings.
To facilitate handling in the practical use of a bale-tie of this type it is important that the keeper 0 should be prevented from escapin g beyond the immediate vicinity of the hook B, and neither in the said Philp tie nor in any other of which I am aware does any provision exist for that purpose or susceptible of accomplishin g that result.
My invention therefore consists in the provision of the stop D, formed or placed upon the hook portion of the bale-tie at a point shortly behind the point of the hook, substantially as suggested in the drawings. This stop D operates to retain the keeper 0 within the immediate vicinity of the hook B, so as to be readily seized and slipped over the point of said hook during the operation of applying the tie to a bale.
The bale-tie illustrated in the drawings is of the class constructed from wire suitably bent; but I do not design my invention to be limited in its application strictly to ties constructed from wire, as any tie employing the hook B and keeper 0 maybe provided with the stop or enlargement D, for the purpose herein specified, without a departure from my invention.
What I claim is 1. In a bale-tie, the combination, with a hook, B, and keeper 0, of a stop, D, for preventing the escape of the keeper G from the immediate vicinity of said hook, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. In a bale-tie, the combination of the loop A, hook B, keeper 0, and stop D, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH WHITE.
