IMPROVEMENT IN c orToN-BALE TiEs.
.Specifica-tion forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,276, dated February l0, 1874; application filed Y July 29, 1873.
To all 'whom fit may co'nccru y Be it lrnown that I, JAMES E. LEA, of the town of Summit, in the county of Pike and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Bale Ties, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which forlnpart of this specification. Y
Figure l. is a side view, showing the tie fastened. Fig. 2 is a top view, showing the tie fastened. Fig. 3 is a -top view of one end of the tie, showing shoulder and catch; and Fig. el is a side view of the opposite end, showing loop for fastening the tie Jtogether.
Like letters in all the figures of the drawings indicate like parts.
This invention consists of a tie for cotton and other bales, inadeof hoopiron, having a shoulder at one end, provided with a catch to receive and hold the opposite end when looped over it so as to dispense with the inconvenience and expense of a buckling device, thus render ing the tie simple and light in its construction and adaptation for the purpose desired, as will be hereinafter more fully explained, and pointed out in the claim.
A is the tie, having' the end a made of sut icient width to form the shoulder band catch c, which latter simply consists of a projection left on the corner edge thereof. (See Figs. 2 and 3.) The opposite end of the tie is made with a loop, cl, by bending it over and down until it assumes the shape seen in Figs. l and 4. The tie toward the shouldered end is made thicker than the rest of it, (see Fig. 1,) so as togive it the requisite strength.
The tie is fastened around the bale by slip ping the loop end over the shoulder until it comes fairly between the inner edge of the tie and the catch, when the pressure of the bale upon. the tie will draw the loop thereof tightly upon the shoulder, and the catch so that it cannot slip off.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The cotton-bale tie A, having one end made with a shoulder, b, and catch c, and the other end with a loop, (l, the whole constructed and fastened substantially as' and for the purpose set forth. y
In testimony 'that I claim the foregoing' I have hereunto set my hand this lst day of l\f'[ay, 1873.
JAMES E. LEA. Vitnesses T. R. STooKDALE, WM. H. GARLAND.
