COTTON BALB TIE.

PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM LOGAN JONES, OF HOLLY SPRINGS, MISSISSIPPI.
COTTON- BALE TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 285,489, dated September 25, 1883. Application led August 30, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern.' u
Beit known that I, WILLIAM L. J oNEs, a
citizen of theUnited States, residing at Holly Springs, in the county of Marshall and State of Mississippi, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Cotton-Bale Ties, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in a cotton-ba1e tie, the coupling being a part of the band `or tie, it being easy of construction and application, there being no parts or attached pieces. I attain the object by the device illustrated in f the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a sectional View, and Fig. 2 a plan view; Fig. 3, a modication of the Jcie as connected; Fig. 4, aside view Fig. 5 the ends of the tie detached.
At one en'd of the tie any number of slots may be cut to suit the various sizes of bales. These slots may vary in size from four-tenths of the width of band or tie to one-third of the same, and be' about one-half inch long, the object being to leave the band with sufticient strength to be safe under any strain in packing cotton. At the other end of the said tie two or more hooks are`cut in the center, which correspond in width with the rst, but should be about five-eighths of an inch long. Said hooks are formed by cutting three sides, leaving one end attached to the body of the band, which is pressed down to or about a right angle with the band. Then an equal angle is formed to the extent of the thickness of thev band from the rst, and leaves the hook formed just under the slot and standing parallel to said band. It will be found that the hooks being cut at exactly equal distances, they will drop into thereof, and
said slots and at once iirmly lock together both ends of said band.
I am aware that a patent exists in which 4 one end of the band has hooks, the other slots; but in this form the tongues have been found to be defective on account of their weakness and liability to break. By the corrugation of a part of the tongue and band this `defect is `4 cured by giving stiffness andV additional strength to the tongues.
To open this tie an implement may be made of a bar of iron forked at one end, with trans;-bm verse slot above fork wide enough to admit 5 end of baud. Byanother form this tie may be made by placing narrow open slots and corrugated tongues and parts of bands on either side of the bands in reverse order, instead of in the center of the band, as shown, 5l the outer edge of opposite side of each band slightly raised at equidistant points between \upper and lower slots. Pressure against these raised edges may be used to aid in opening the ties.
Having thus described my invention, what I Aclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A bale-tie formed by having at one end of the band slots and at the other tongues or" hooks, all cut or running in one direction, parts of the band and hooks being corru-AV gated, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signa-ture in presence of two witnesses.
