-NiTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY RIESEL, 0F GALVESTON, TEXAS.
BALE-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,616, dated August 24, 1880.
Application filed Api-i130, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRYRIESEL, of Galveston, in the county of Galveston, and in the State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bale Ties; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying'drawings, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon, making a part of this specication.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a bale-tie, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
I n the annexed drawings, Figure l is a plan view ot' my bale-tie. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3a cross'section, of the same.
My bale-tie is made of a single piece of band or scrap iron, A, so folded as to make four layers, as shown in the drawings, after which the opening B B is cut with a machine for the purpose. The part B of the opening is lengthwise through the center, having parallel sides for a certain distance, but at one end the opening tapers, as shown, and from the lnain part the slot B' is cut inclined through the edge of the tie.
This tie, from the small cost of material and manufacture, can be made very cheap, while at the same time it is strong and durable.
The band will have more bearing-surface than ordinary ties afford. The opening B' being out on an angle allows the band to be more easily placed in position, and at the same time with great rapidity.
It will be observed that when the tie is eompleted arib is formed at each end of same. In bending the metal the ribs may be made solid at one end by turning one end of the strap in closely and abruptly, while the other rib may be open or hollow. Ineither case a great deal of strength is given to the tie by the use of the ribs.
I am aware that a bale-tie similarto mineV in general configuration has been made of one piece of cast metal. Hence l declare this as not my invention.
I claim nothing on the general configuration of the cast tie or its openings; nor do Iclaim anything upon the ribs at the ends of the tie; but What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The within bale-tie, made ot hoop or strap iron, folded as shown, with ribs at each end, and provided with suitable openings to receive a baleband, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of April, 1880.
HENRY RIESEL.
