v-MODE OF SPLICING BALE-BANDS.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 237,039, dated January 25, 1881.
Application filed November 19, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom/it may conce/rn:
Be it known that I, LEWIS MILLER, of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain newI and useful Improvenlents in Mode of Splicing Bale-Bands; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and t0 the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in fastenings for cotton and other baleties; and it has for its objects to provide a means whereby the ends or two portions of a bale may be securely connected together and held, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the devices and mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a longitudinal sectional view, showing two ends or portions of a band connected together according to my invention; 'and Fig. 2 represents a top view, showing my improvement applied to a bale-tie.
The letters A A' respectively indicate the ends or portions of the bale-tie to be united or spliced. The said ends or portions are formed with interlockinglips or tonguesB, constructed by cutting or punching the metal by means of a suitable tool or apparatus. These interlocking lips or tongues are so formed that when the overlapping portions of the band are drawn upon longitudinally they will take into or engage with each other and securely fasten the two parts. Between the two series or sets of interlocking lips or tongues, after the ends or portions of the band to be spliced have been drawn so as to lock the lips or tongues, the metal of the overlapping ends or portions of the band is cut through and upset, oi' the parts pressede together so as to form an intermediate fastening between the interlocking lips or tongues, as indicated by the letters C in the drawings.
As thus constructed, it will be perceived that the intermediate locking device will prevent the interlocking lips from becoming separated by any possibility after the ends of the band have been spliced.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, iS-
A bale-band tie provided with projecting lips cut from the metal and adapted to interlock by slipping the ends of the band longitudinally in opposite directions, and with intermediate locking devices formed after the lips have been interlocked, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of November, 1880.
LEWIS MILLER.
