UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIo'E.
YOUNG F. WRIGHT, OF JAMESTOWN, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-BALE TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 53,469, dated July 28, 1874; application filed July 2, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I,'YOUNG F. WRIGHT, of Jamestown, county of Chattahoochee and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Bale Tie, of which the following is a specification The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a cotton-bale tie, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to de' scribe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my baletie; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same through the line at m, Fig. 1.
My bale-tie is made of a single square metal plate, A, through which is made a mortise, a. Parallel with this mortise is a slot, I), extending from one edge of the plate inward to a point even with the opposite end of the mortise. The sides of this slot are beveled, as shown in Fig. 2, and provided with notches aw in the inner edges. The outer ends of the sides of the slot b are rounded, so that the strap can be easily slipped over the corner and into the slot. The mortise a secures one end of the strap to the tie with a common loop. The other end is secured by being slipped into the beveled slot 1) at any point along the tie to produce a sufficient tightness. The tie A is placed on edge, with the mortise a upward, and the strap inserted as above; then, when the pressure on the bale is removed, the tie or buckle straightens itself, creating a kink in the strap, making a secure fastening.
Ordinary hoop or band iron is used with this tie.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new,-and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The bale-tie herein described, consisting of the plate A, provided with the mortise a and beveled slot 1), havingrounded end and notches w in the inner edges, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I hereunto affix my signature this 25th day of June, 187 4.
YOUNG F. WRIGHT.
