Description
P. SLATTERY. comer: BALE TIE.
No.174;707. Patented Marchl, 1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIC.
PATRICK SLA'ITERY, OF CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTO N-BALE TIES- Speci fication forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,707, dated March 14, 1876 application filed December 2, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that-I, PATRICK SLAT'IERY, of Charleston, in the county of Charleston and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Bale-Ties; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompan yin gdrawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of baleties which-are made of a single plate, and used with a band of hoop-iron; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of such bale-tie, provided with a shoulder or offset for the application of a forked lever to raise the band out of the tie for removing it from the bale without cutting the band, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, Figure l is a plan view, showing my baletie with the iron band in place. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the tie. Fig. 3 shows the forked lever used to remove the band.
A represents the bale-tic, formed of a square plate with a slot, at, near one side and parallel therewith. Through this slot is passed one end of the hoop or band B, which end may be left loose underneath, or riveted, or otherwise permanently fastened to the body of the band, if desired. The other end of the band B is bent to form a loop, B, in the usual manner. Near the opposite side of the plate A is out a slot, 1), of the same length as the slot at; but this latter slot 1) is cut open at 6, through one of the other sides of the plate forming the incline d, as shown, and leaving the inner end b of the slot uncut. 7
When the loop B is slipped over the lip h, formed at the outer end of the slot, and into the same, the part b of the slot forms a lock to hold theband in place and prevent it from slipping up.
The lip h is cut out on the outer side, forming a shoulder, i, upon which a forked lever, (J, is placed, with its prongs inserted in the loop B, one on each side of the bale-tie.
By turning this lever on the shoulder i as its fulcrum, the loop may be raised over the lip h and slipped out of the tie, so that the band may thus be removed from the bale without cutting the same, and hence the band can be used over and over again.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a bale buckle or tie, as constructed, the shoulder or offset 6, on the outer side of the lip, for the insertion of the forkedlever 0, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WM. B. UPPERMAN, 0. H. WATsoN.
