Description

E. H. STA F F0 B D.
Cotton-Bale Ties. No.50,096. PatentedApri121,1a74.
ttorncya UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- ELIAS H. STAFFORD, OF KERNERSVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-BALE TIES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,096, dated April 21, 1874 application filed March 10, 1874.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ELIAS HENLEY STAF- FORD, of Kernersville, in the county of Forsyth and in the State ot' North Carolina, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Cotton-Bale Ties; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference bein g had to the accompanying '(lrawiiigs, and to the letters of reference marked` thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a cotton-bale tie to be used with an ordinary iron hoop or strap, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure lis a longitudinal section of my baletie with the hoop or strap fastened therein 5 and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same.
A represents an ordinary iron hoop or strap havin g its ends bent to form interlocking hooks a a. B represents the tie, cast in the shape of an oblong box open at both ends. The bottom of the interior of the box is inclined from the center downward toward each end. The top is level or horizontal, and the sides are slightly curved, as shown in Fig. 2.
The tie is placed over one end of the hoop, and the ends or hooks a a of the hoop locked, when the tie is moved over the lock. As the tie slides over the lock it tightens on the same, preventing' the ends from rising up, making it impossible for the ends of the hoop to disengage, thereby forming a permanent, cheap, and convenient tie.
The tie may be moved from oft' the lock of the hoop, which then disengages itself, and the cotton can then be unbaled with ease, without damage to either hoops or ties.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The box B, provided with an interior horizontal slot, the upper surface ot' which slot is on a straight line, and the bottom and sides made flaring from a central point outward, in combination with the strap A, .with interlock ing hooks a a, as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of February, 1874.
ELIAS HENLEY STAFFORD.
