STATES RICHARD TERRELL, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BALE-TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 16 1,07 1, dated March 23, 1875; application filed January 13, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD TERRELL, a resident of the city of New Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bale-Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved device by means of which I am enabled to secure together the ends of bale-bands, and effectually hold the same in proper position upon bales of cotton or other goods without in any manner depending upon the pressure exerted against the ends of the said bands by the expansion of the contents of the bales.
My invention, which is easily comprehended, is clearly shown in the accompanying illustrative drawing.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my device or tie-plate, and Fig. 2 a perspective view of the same with the ends of a baleband securely attached thereto.
My device may be constructed of cast, malleable, or wrought iron. It consists of a flat plate, A, over which is folded or cast a bar, B, and shield 0, sufficient space being left between each of these and the body of the device for the free insertion of a band of ordinary hoop-iron. The lower or flat portion of the device is continued beyond the bar B, as shown at D, in order to provide a friction-surface, against which the oblate hoo'k formed at one end of the band may impinge, and thereby not only prevent it from slipping, but at the same time relieve it of pressure from the expansive force of the contents of the bale.
In order to afford more facility in the construction of the device, as Well as to lighten the weight of the same, the center portion of the bar B may be omitted, as shown by dotted lines a: a2.
The shield O, which extends the whole width of the device, has its extreme end turned down parallel with the sides of the same, for the purpose of preventing the band from slipping off its seat.
The manner in which my improved device is applied is as follows: One end of a baleband is first bent into the form of an oblate hook, and secured to the bar B, with the short end of the hook under said bar, and resting on the prolongation of the fiat portion of the device, as shown at a. The opposite end of the band, after being drawn tightly around the bale, is folded inwardly into an oblate hook, which is secured to the device by slipping it sidewise over the shield 0.
Having described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Acotton-bale tie consisting of the base-plate A, having a bar, B, cast with or folded over the same, and the projecting section D of the plate A, having the relation to the plate B shown, whereby the lower section of the hook of which the plate B provides the hearing shall, when fastened, extend along said plate D, impinging against the same, as stated, and the shield 0 running the whole width of the base-plate A, and curved at its outer section, as shown, so as to provide a lateral opening for the insertion of the hook on the free end of the band, and a bearing-shoulder to retain the same in position when fastened, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
