Description

G. W. STOUT.
PACKAGE TIE.
APPLICATION men JUNE I2. 1917.
Patented Nov. 9, 1920.
ATTORNEY;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. STOUT, F MERCHANTVILLE, NEW JERSEY.
PACKAGE-TIE.
Application filed June 12,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE YV. STOUT, a citizen of the United States, residing at lvlerchantville, in the county of Camden, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Package-Tie, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a novel construction of package tie, composed of a suitable plate or body portion, which may be made of wood or paper fiber, metal, wood, or any other suitable material, possessing the requisite strength and rigidity, said body having at one end thereof, a tongue or extension provided with inwardly converging outer side walls, which at the point of their junction with the said body are provided with recesses, the portion of said body opposite said extension being provided with an inwardly extending oblique slot, cut or kerf, which merges into a transversely extending slot, whose termini extend in each direction a short distance beyond the walls of said oblique slot, said body having an eye located substantially in line with said transversely extending slot, which is adapted for the re ception of a tying cord having a knot in the end thereof.
To the above ends, my invention consists of a novel construction of a package tie, which can be readily placed in position and interlocked with the tying cord and untied with equal readiness upon the proper manipulation of the latter.
It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawing, a typical embodiment of it, which is at present preferred by me, since this embodiment will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a perspective View of a package tie embodying my invention, showing also a package and a tying cord therearound.
Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the pack- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1920. 1917. Serial No. 174,200.
age tie seen in Fig. 1, with the tying cord detached therefrom.
Fig. 3 represents a showing the preferred lating the tying cord.
Similar numerals 'of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings '1 designates my novel construction of package tie, the same comprising a body portion 2 having at one end thereof a tongue or extension 3 provided with the inwardly converging outer walls 41, which at their point of junction with the body 2, are provided with the recesses 5.
6 designates an inwardly extending oblique slot having its mouth slightly wider than its walls, said slot merging into the transverse slot 7, whose termini 8 and 9 extend a short distance to each side of the walls of said slot 6, the body having an eye 10 located substantially in alinement with said slot 7 for the reception of the knotted end 11 of the tying cord 12, which latter has the free end 13.
The manner of using my device will be apparent from Figs. 1 and 2, the plate or body portion 2 being placed upon the package 14 in substantially the manner indicated in Fig. 1, and the cord 12 after having been wrapped or looped around said package, having its free end drawn through the slot 6, and then pulled against the terminal 8 and thence passed over the juxtaposed recess 5, thence under the extension 3 and under the body 2, and after passing into the recesses 6 and 7, being pulled into the position seen in Fig. 1, whereupon the package will be securely tied.
It will be apparent that any accidental pull upon the free end 13 of the tying cord will not disengage the same, as said free end must be drawn through the slots 7 and 6 in a particular manner in order to eflect the untying operation.
It will be apparent that while I have shown the tie body as being preferably of circular exterior contour, said contour may be changed, and while I preferably con struct the body portion of vulcanized fiber, as this material can be cheaply manufactured and possesses the requisite strength and rigidity, other materials may be used diagrammatic view, manner of manipuwithout departing from the spirit of my invention.
invention and the above description, and
while I have, in the present instance, shown and described a typical embodiment thereof ,which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that this embodiment is susceptible of modification in various particularswithout departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A package tie, comprising a body portion merging into a transversely extending slot 7 extending at an angle to said tongue and havmg termlnals 8 and 9 c0nt1nued beyond said oblique slot, said body having an eye 7 therein in substantial alinement with said transverse slot, and located to one side of the median line of said tongue and body.
GEORGE WVJSTOUT.
