To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE WV. STOUT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Merchantville, county of Camden, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and usewith inwardly converging walls, a side of said body having a relatively wide, obllque slot therein, which merges into a longitudinally extending somewhat narrower slot having converging walls which serve to grip the free end of the tying cord after the latter has been properly manipulated to effect the tying operation, means being thus provided for enabling a package or bundle of relatively small or large size varying from a bundle of letters to a bale of hay or cotton to be effectively and expeditiously tied or untied.

For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawing one form thereof which is at pres ent preferred by me, since the same will be found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

Figure 1 represents a plan view of my novel package tie, embodying my invention, showing the same as applied to a bundle of letters.

Referring to the drawings.

1 designates my novel construction of package tie the same comprising a plate or body 2 which I preferably makeof vulcanized fiber and may be of substantially rectangular or similar contour and provided with the sides 3 and i and the end wall5. 6 designates a tongue or extension having converging walls 7 and 8 on the end of the body opposite to the end 5 and at the bottom of said wall 7 is located a recess 9 for the reception of the tying cord 10 which has one end passed through the hole or aperture 1.1 and provided with a knot 12, said cord encircling the package 13 of envelops or other matter which it is desired to tie. l l designates an obliquely extending relatively wide slot in the side 4, which merges into or unites at 15 with the longitudinally extending slot 16 whose walls converge downwardly toward the hole. 11, said slot having its terminus above said hole and the function of said converging walls being to grip the free end 17 of the tying cord, as will be apparent fromFigs. 1 and 4. I preferably, at about the point 15 provide an en larged or elongated recess, whose terminus 18 may extend to one side of or beyond the median line of the tie body 2 for the pur pose of coacting with the recess 9 during the tying operation as will be explained.

The manner of effecting the tying operation will be apparent from Figs. 1 and 4, it being apparent that the free end of the cord 10 after being sufiiciently wrapped or looped around the package or bundle to be tied is carried into the slot 14., thence around the tongue or extension 6 and looped therearound, as seen in Fig. i. The free end of the tying cord is then brought under the bottom of the tie body and then into the slot 14: and lastly a pull is exerted on said free end in the direction of the eye 11 until said free end assumes the position seen in Fig. l where it will be firmly held against acciden tal displacement by the convergence of the walls of the slot 16. It will be seen that by the employment of the recesses 9 and 18 a throat is formed at the point 19 which effectually retains the portion of the tying cord looped therearound or in engagement therewith. It will thus be seen that I obtain an important function by the collocation and employment of the converging walls of the tongue or extension 6, in conjunction with the recesses 9 and 15 located substantially as shown.

It will further be seen thatby the employment of the converging walls 7 and 8,

the portion of the cord in engagement there: with 1s prevented from slipping therefrom. I preferably arrange the slot 16, eye lland tongue or extension 6 in the sameinedian or longitudinal line but slight changes may be made in this arrangement, if desired, and the widths and proportions of the slots ltand 16 may be varied according to requirements.

While 1 preferably construct my novel construction of tie body 2 out of vulcanized fiber, I have found this material to be exceedingly efficient, as it possesses the requisite strength and rigidity, it will be apparent that the tie body may be constructed of otherinaterial itdesiredr results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

' Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-' ters' Patent, is V A paclgage tie, comprising a body, having a tongue projecting from one end thereof and having side walls which converge inwardly toward said body, one of said side walls merging into the curved recess 9, at its junction with said body, the latter having a relatively wide oblique slot 1a in one side thereofhaving an inclined terminal 18 extending toward said tongue beyond the median line of said body, the latter having a slot 16, extending from said slot 14, in a direction opposite to said tongue, and said body having an eye therein intermediate the end of said slot 1-6 andthe end of said body opposite said tongue. l
