UNITED STATES l nemen,
PATET HANDLE FOR PACKAGE-CARRIERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 329,131, dated October 27, 1885.
Application filed April 18, 1885. Serial N 0. 162,658. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARRIE O. BOYD, of Fruitport, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Handle for Packages, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to facilitate the convenient carriage of packages which are 5 end over the cord so it will enter the space or bound with cord or twine in the usual manner.
The invention consists in a handle for packages, made with a central part forming a handgrasp and with opposite ends bent to form three open loops, into which the cord of the package passes when the handle is applied to the package, all as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of. reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a'perspective View of my improved handle as adjusted. for use in carrying a package, and Fig. 2 is side elevation of the handle.
My improved handle consists preferably of a cylinder or bar, A, of Wood or other suitable material, forming a hand-grasp and bored centrally lengthwise, as at a, and a wire, B, passed through the bore a and bent about at right angles with the handle at each end of the handle, the Wire then being bent upon itself back and forth three times, so as to have at each end of the handle a general form resembling the letter W; or, in other words, the bent Wire Will present to View four parallel straight parts with three open spaces or loops, b 0 d, betweenthem, as clearly shown in the drawings.
To adjust the handle A B to carry a pack agethe one, C, for instance-each bent end of the wire B will separately be engaged with the cord D of thepackage by first slipping the loop b, then entering the cord in the space or loop 0, and then passing the extremities of the wire under the cord so the cord will enter the space or loop at, and the cord then will slip down or may be forced down to the bends of the cord against the bends ef of the wire,
as will readily be understood.
It is evident that the package cannot slip from the handle, and the greater the Weight of the package the more securely will it be held by the handle, and the handle may easily be applied to the package-cord and as easily be removed therefrom for use many times, and the handle may very cheaply be made and may be used with thick or thin cords.
The cylinder or part Aof the handle affords opportunity of affixing to it an advertising label or print, as at E, of the store from which the goods wrapped in the package were sent, and directions for delivering the package may also be written or marked on the label.
The handle may be formed entirely of a stout wire, B, bent at the ends and without the hand-grasp A placed on it; but the use of the grasp A is preferred, as it prevents cutting of the hands by the wire and allows attachment of the advertising-label, as above described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A handle for packages, made with a central part forming a handgrasp and with opposite ends bent to form three open loops, substantially as herein set forth.
2. Ahandle for packages, made with a handgrasp, A, and a wire, B, passed through grasp A, and having ends bent to form three open loops, 1) c d, substantially as herein set forth.
CARRIE O. BOYD.
