LETTER BINDER.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 24, 1909. RENEWED APR. 17, 1911.

TE 'I FIQ.
ALVIN W. COLLINS, OF GREENMONT, SOUTH DAKOTA.
LETTER-BINDER.
Application filed August 24, 1909, Serial No. 514,406.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVIN W. COLLINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenmont, in the county of Lawrence and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Letter-Binders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in letter binders and more particularly to that class adapted to be used for binding letters into bunches.
A further object is to provide means for quickly attaching or disengaging the ends of the binders and a further object is to provide means for holding the envelop in a compact form.
Other objects and advantages will be here inafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective View showing a bundle of letters and my improved tying device thereon. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation partly in section of a bundle of letters and tying device therefor. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one end of the tying device, and, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the opposite end of the tying device.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates a bundle of letters, which may be of any convenient size, around which are disposed the tying bands 2 and 3, of my improved tying device, the band 2 being greater in length than the band 3 and adapted to extend longitudinally of the envelops, while the shorter band 3 extends transversely of the envelops and by forming said bands of elastic material, they may be extended around bundles of various sizes.
One of the ends of each of the bands is provided with a hook 4, which is adapted to engage a link 5 carried by the opposite Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 1, 1911.
Renewed April 17, 1911. Serial No. 621,627.
ends of the bands, so that when said bands are properly stretched around the bundle of envelops, the hooks will securely hold the bands around the envelops. The meeting ends of the band 8 are so placed as to dispose the hook and link below the band 2, when said band 2 is secured in position around the envelops, while the meeting ends of the band 2 are so arranged as to dispose the hook and link to one side of the band 3 and by disposing the hooks downwardly, said hooks will be securely protected from engaging objects, which will result in disengaging the links from the hooks and in order to hold the bands in proper relationship with each other, they are fastened together as by means of stitching or otherwise at their pointof crossing each other below the bundle of envelops. By disposing the hooks downwardly, they are pressed against the envelops, which will obviate any possibilityof the hooks becoming casually disengaged from the links and by placing the hook and link on the band 2 at one side of the band 3, the tying device will be less bulky than if the hooks were placed immediately over each other.
In operation, the bands are separated and spread out and the package of envelops placed thereover, when the ends of the band 8 are brought together and the hook at one end engaged with the link on the opposite end, when the ends of the band 2 are brought together and similarly connected, thus binding the package into a compact form and in condition to be readily handled for distributing purposes and it will likewise be seen that in view of the elasticity of the bands, they may be placed around packages of various sizes.
hat I claim is:
A device of the character described, comprising a pair of elastic bands of uneven lengths intersecting and secured to one another at right angles and at their middles, one end of each of said bands being provided with a downwardly facing hook and the opposite ends provided with links adapted to be engaged by said hooks, said bands when engaged with an object having the name to this specification in the presence of meeting ends of the shorter in the path of two subscribing witnesses.
the lon er band and the meetin ends of said lo ger band being in alineiient with ALVIN COLLINS and to one side of the meeting ends of said Witnesses:
shorter band. ARTHUR 0. WILSON, In testimony whereof I have signed my SID SILVERTHORN.
