PACKAGE-CARRIER HANDLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 743,945, dated November 10, 1903. Application filed March 10, 1903. Serial No. 147,172. (No model.)

To a. whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, THOMAS/J. SODEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package-Carrier Handles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. I

The object of my invention is the production of a handle that shall be simple, strong, easy to attach to a package or parcel, convenient to hold in the hand, and cheap to manufacture.

One form of my invention is shown in the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my invention attached to a package and the manner of carrying the same by means of the handle. Fig. 2 is a top plan view; Fig. 3, an end elevation; Fig. 4, a side elevation, and Fig. 5 a bottom 'plan View.

The contour of the handle I prefer to use is clearly shown in the various views and is similar to handles ordinarily used-such as pail-handles, &c.the largest diameter being the central part and curving down gradually until near the ends, where it rises and is rounded over; but my invention applies equally well to a plain cylindrical handle or to one of any desirable shape, and the shape described has been chosen merely because it is a conventional and convenient one.

I form in the upper side of the handle longitudinally to the axis a groove or slot A,

which extends down into and forms part of the circular hole B, which has beenpreviously bored in the handle. For a short distance at either end of the handle I extend the groove or slot still farther downward through the remaining portion and refer to these additional portions of the slot as G and D respectively, and these are tapered at their inner ends. At the central portion of the handle I form another groove or slot F transversely to the axis of the'handle and substantially at right angles to the groove A. This slot extends at least half-way down from the top through the handle and is tapering at the bottom.

Packages that are secnred'by twine or cords care in doing up the package to have generally have two or more strands of the same passing around them, one set crossing longitudinally and the other transversely at right angles to one another and at the points near the center of the top and bottom surfaces. In applying my improved handle to a package I slip it under the crossed strands,

' so that the longitudinal strand or strands will slip down into the longitudinal slot and the transverse strand or strands down into the transverse slot. As the transverse slot is tapered at the bottom and the portions 0 and D of the longitudinal slot are also tapering the crossed strands 3 am and are securely held in place, and the package is conveniently and easily carried by grasping the handle, the transverse strands passing between the fingers of the hand.

It is obvious that my invention can be readily applied to packages of all sizes, and where greater security is desirable two transverse slots at the ends of the handle may be em ployed to engage cross-strands of a package instead of the single central recess or slot shown, it merely being necessary to use alittle the strands cross in the right place.

It is further obvious that my invention may be made of any desirable materialsuch as from the spirit of my inventionsuch as, for

instance, the omission of the central longitudinal hole shown in the drawings-and I do not limit myself to this particular form; but

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters, Patent, is I 1. A package-carrier consisting of a handle provided with right-angled recesses within which the strands of a cord used in securing apac'kage are adapted to be wholly contained, said recesses extending to the center of said handle and the ends thereofbeing tapered for the purpose of securely holding the said strands, substantially as described.
