HAIR CURLER Filed March 12, 1949 facture.
Patented Apr. 17, 1951 HAIR CURLER Samuel Frishberg, New York, N. Y., assignor to Delamere Company, Inc., Jersey City, N. J., a
corporation of Delaware Application March 12, 1949, Serial No. 81,203
This invention relates to a hair curler of the mandrel or winding form type intended to be worn temporarily in the hair to form a curl.
One object of the invention is to provide a hair curler of the mandrel type having hairengaging teeth that operates efiectually to wind the hair inacurl. 7
Another object is to provide a hair curler of this type that is easy to manipulate.
A further object is to provide a curler of light weight that may be comfortably worn in the hair. a
A still further objectis to provide a hair curler that is simple and inexpensive to manu- With these, and other objects in mind, the invention will appear clearlyfrom the following description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,in which: Fig. l is a front elevationof the hair curler;
Fig. 2 is a. bottom view; Fig. 3 isjan end view 4 Claims. (Cl. 132-40) Fig. 4 is a section on line 4 4 'ofFig. ,1; and,
Fig. 5is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2. The hair curler comprises a longitudinal flexible member IU of greater width than thickness provided with opposed sets of teeth ll along the central portion of its upper and lower edges. The member i0 may be made .of flexible plastic material, rubberor other suitable substance, and it has a pliable'metal strip or wire l2 extending lengthwise therethrough.
A spool I3 which may be made of aluminum or lightweight, non-corrosive metal or other material is supported on and about the member 10 intermediate the ends M of the latter which through the slot and the blank is rolled or bent around the central portion of the member 10.
The two'edges of the blank that form the joint I! when the blank is rolled into shape are provided with notches 18, which notches combined form an opening corresponding to the slot I 6, through which opening the teeth of the second held in fixed position in relation to the member I0 by reason of the fact thatthe teeth of the latter pass-through the openings in the spool as best seen in Fig. 5.
In use the end or the lock of hair to be curled is engaged in the teeth and is wound about the spool, after which the ends [4 of member ID are bent over to hold the device in place and prevent the hair from unrolling.
On reference to Fig. 3 it will be noted that the spool I3 is hollow and spaced from the two sides of member [0. This permits of circulation of air through the center of the spool while the hair is wound thereon and thus facilitates rapid drying of the hair and formation of the curl.
While I have described and illustrated a preferred form of the device, it is to be understood that various modifications may be made thereof within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. A hair curler comprising a longitudinal pliable member having teeth along the central portion of its upper and lower edges, and a hollow rigid spool member mounted on the central por- "tion of the longitudinal member with the ends of the latter extending outward beyond the respective ends of the former, said spool. member having openings through which the teeth of the longitudinal member project.
2. A hair curler comprising a longitudinal pliable member having teeth along the central portion of its upper and lower edges, and a hollow spool member having a concave peripheral surface mounted on the central portion of the' longitudinal member with the ends of the latter'extending outward beyond the respective ends of the former, said spool member having openings through which the teeth of the longitudinal member project.
3. A hair curler comprising a rigid hollow spool member, and an elongated flat pliable member extending longitudinally through the spool member, said spool member being mounted on the pliable member'and spaced from the sides thereof to provide open ended air passages between said members, said pliable members having teeth on its upper and lower edges which teeth project through openings in the spool member.
4. A hair curler comprising a longitudinal pliable member of greater width than thickness set-project. It will be seen that-the spool I3 is having teeth along the central portion of two opposite edges, and a hollow metal spool mounted on and about the central portion of said pliable member, said spool having openings at opposite points of its surface through which openings the teeth project, said openings being of substantially the same width and breadth as the teeth so that engagement of the teeth in the openings UNITED STATES PATENTS Numb holds the spool in fixed position relative to the 1 5 i 53 bngitudinal member- 2:388:791 MaxwfIIIIII Nov 13 1945' SAMUEL FRISHBERG- 5 2,391,284 Weiss Dec, 18, 1945 REFERENCES CITED FOREIGN PATENTS The following references are of record in the Number Country Date file of this patent: 104,585 Australia July 28, 1938
