Zmr/ardf rooms 1...... cc, 1939 U ITED STATES swam PATENT Y OFFICE 7 a 19 Claims. -My mvention relates to hair curlers and more particularly to a curling device embodying means for both forming curls. and, in combination with a hairpin, means for maintaining the hair ma curled position. The invention also contemplates a novel method of accomplishing the above.

. Until recent times hair curling by individuals has been eil'ected eitherby a heated iron. orby a number oi curlers which curled the hair sections and clamped the curl against unwinding. Each curl required a separate curler and the obvious disadvantages inherent in sucha procedure has stimulated new inventions to eilect the desired result in a less cumbersome fashion. These -inventionsgenerally comprise a tubuiar. rod having a clamping member hinged thereonand a hair retained, in the tubular rod. when the hair 'section hasbeen clamped and wound around the Jtubuiar rod. the clamp is reieased'and the resultll! ihg curl is pushed laterally until it is .disposed between the shanks of the hair pin, which shanks have been maintained separated. At this point,

. the shanks oi the hair pin are caused to approach one another, thus clamping and maintaining the curl against unwinding.

This procedure has entailed some disadvantages of its own among which are the inability to form a good curl on the tubular rod, and the further distortion of the curl when it is manually pushed so asto approach the hair pin. In addition, the release 01 the member or the tubular rod to enable the curl to be pushed, n j loosens the out! immediately prior to its deposit within the confines of the hair pin.

has a substantially c-shaped slot 2| formed therein, the lower leg of said-slot having a sunken level 25. For ease and certainty of manipulation, a saddle 20 having a knurled edge is formed on the outer end of the member 23.

A locking member 21 is effective to maintain the retractable comb it within section A, in either the projected or retracted position. The locking member 21 comprises substantially pennant-shaped walls II and 29 bridged by the portion 30 and having a slot 3! formed therein. While the slot as shown herein is T-shaped, said shape is immaterial to the operation of the device, the shape being decorative while the, slot itself is functional. In addition, the wall 28 is formed with a lip ila.

The retractable comb l9 is assembled within section A by inserting one wall of the locking member 21 into the slot 24 of the manipulating member 23 and giving the locking member 21 a half-turn whereby the bridge 30 thereof will be disposed across the vertical leg of the slot 24. 28 or 22 should be of slightly greater width than the vertical leg of the slot 24- so that the assembly is eflected by forcing the locking member 21 through said slot 34, which action will discourage an inadvertent,

dis-assembly of the device. The lug 22 is then placed'under the ledge I! as in Fig. 1, and the locking member is caused to straddle the section A at a point which is adapted to retain said locking member. This is accomplished by

When the retractable comb I! has been thus assembled as shown in Fig. i, the bridge I. will be disposed in the sunken level "'0! the slot 24 and the locking member 21 being anchored as aforesaid to section A, the retractable comb I! will be locked in the position shown in Fig. l. The lug 22 will also be frictionally restrained by the ledge I! while the spring wire I, bearing against the back of the comb l9 urges the comb to its operative position.

In order to retractthe comb, thevmanipuiating member Il may be directed toward section B whereby the bridge 30 will leave the level I! and will be disposed in the vertical leg of the slot 24. The comb may then be depressed by applying the force of the finger I" to the saddle 20 whereby the comb will be i ered, against the action of the spring wire I41" The comb I! may then be locked in this'retracted position by sliding it forward with the finger, the bridge 30 then entering the upper horizontal leg of the slot 2! thereby looking the comb as shown in Fig. 2.

My invention is practiced in the following mam ner:

The device in the position shown in- Fig. 1 is applied to a tres of hair, the retractable comb l0 combing the hair tress. A few strokes are sufnil of the 'flcient to satisfactorily comb said tress and, the comb l9 being drawn to the outer end of the tress, the device is turned so as to cause the tress to curl around section A and to be located wholly within the confines of the two comb teeth defining the width of the curl. Thus a well formed curl is prepared for the subsequent operation which prevents its unwinding. The foregoing procedure for a different purpose has been described in Patent No. 2,137,828 granted to me as co-inventor on November 22, 1938.

When the curl has been sufliciently formed thus and the device has approached the scalp, the comb I9 is retracted and housed within the hollow of section A by applying the necessary move-,

ments to the manipulating member. The comb I! is thereby locked in the inoperative position while the slight slack in the curl can be drawn up by slightly drawing on the device.

At this point it is possible to turn the device relative to the curl, that is, within the curl and the hair pin II which is fixed relative to the device can be thus caused to turn and thereby to lie adjacent any portion of the curl which the operator considers will be most desirable. This having been accomplished and the curl being wound around the section A while the comb i9 is housed therein, the hair pin 36 is pushed further into the bore II, the shank 31 sliding along the groove l5 and the shank 39 ,which is formed with an uplifted end, embracing and clamping the curl against the base I1 01' the device. Thus the curl is clamped against unwinding beiore it is removed from the device so that its subsequent removal is not attended with an unnecessary distortion of its shape and the union is effected without manipulating the curl which has been formed as desired. The uplifted end of the shank 39 insures the necessary clamping of the curl without initially disturbing the efl'ect theretoiore achieved.

The device is then removed whereby another hair pin may be inserted and another curl formed. The removal is accomplished by grasping the curl and hair pin with one hand and withdrawing the device with the other. The curl therefore remains and is maintained against unwinding by the air pin which may be so disposed as not to be visible.

I have show a preferred embodiment of my invention but it is obvious that numerous changes and omissions may be made without departing from its spirit. For example while I have shown my invention as operating with one hair pin, it may be desirable to provide the end wall It with two or even more bores like bore ll so that a plurality oi hair pins may be simultaneously applied to the curl. One of these hair pins may be decorative, as embedded with jewels or formed of a brightly hued plastic or metal, and may be applied so as to be visible. It willbe obvious that should a hair pin of decorative nature be employed, my device enables it to be applied where it will be visible as desired.

A hair curling device comprising a first memher around which hair can be spirally wound, a second member connected to said first member for engaging a tress of hair, and a hair pin disposed substantially laterally of said members, the shanks thereof being maintained by said holder in substantially normal and clamping relationship.

A hair curling device comprising a body portion for engaging a tress of hair and for winding said tress into :3. our] and a hair pin maintained on said body portion and substantially laterally thereof, the shanks of said hair pin being maintained in a substantially normal and clamping relationship, one shank of said hair pin having its end offset in respect to the end of the other shank whereby said hair pin can be actuated to clamp said curl without spreading said shanks from said substantially normal and clamping relationship.

4. A pair curling device comprising a first member around which hair can be spirally wound, a second member connected to said first member, for engaging a tress of hair, said first member having an opening at one end thereof and having a depression at the base thereof said opening being adapted to receive one shank of a hair pin and said depression being adapted to engage a hump on the other shank of said hair pin, the disposition of said opening and said depression being such that said hair pin is supported with the shanks thereof in substantially normal and clamping relationship.

5. A hair curling device comprising a mandrel about which hair is adapted to be wound, said mandrel having an opening at one end thereof for receiving one shank of a hair pin and having means at said end for engaging a hump near the end of the other shank of said hair pin, said opening and means being operative to CERTIFICATE OF CORRECTION.

In combination, a hair pin having a hump near the end of one shank thereof and a holder having an engaging element at one end thereof said engaging element being complementary to said hump, said holder comprising a body portion having an elongated slot and comb member slidable in said slot, means for acting against said comb member to urge it outwardly to the operative position, said hair pin being maintained by said body portion substantially laterally of said comb member by engaging said hump with said complementary engaging element of the holder, and means to retract said comb member to the inoperative position.

7. In combination, a hair pin having a hump near the end of one shank thereof and a holder having an engaging element at one end thereof, said engaging element being complementary to said hump. a hair engaging member connected to said holder, said hair pin being maintained by said body portion substantially laterally of said hair engaging member by engaging said hump with said complementary engaging element of the holder, and means for urging said hair engaging member to the inoperative position.

8. A hair curling device according to claim 7 wherein said locking member is provided with a bridge piece and said C-shaped slot is provided with a sunken level on its lower leg whereby the location of said bridge piece in said sunken level locks said comb member in the operative position.

9. A hair curling device comprising a body portion having an elongated slot, 2. comb member retractible in said slot, and a detachable locking member for locking said comb member in the operative or inoperative positions and for preventing displacement of said comb member from said elongated slot.

10. A hair curling device according to claim 9, wherein said locking member comprises a U- shaped element of resilient material straddling a portion of said slot of said body portion whereby to prevent displacement of said comb member and engaging said comb member whereby to lock it in the operative or inoperative positions. v
