UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES A. CLINTON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
COMB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 713,402, dated November 11, 1902.
Application filed July 1, 1902. derial No. 113,885. (No model.)
T0 ctZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES A. CLINTON, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Comb, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to combs for the hair, and more particularly to such as are designated back combs and used by ladies for holding the hair and for ornamenting the same.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the comb, showing certain parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the comb, showing certain movable parts thereof in a different relation to that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section upon the line a: a? of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrows, and Fig. 4 is a section on the line y y of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
A cylindrical tubular member 1, slightly curved, is surmounted by a crown-piece 2, which serves as a handle and may be rendered ornamental, if desired. A number of teeth 3 are secured upon the cylindrical member 1, preferably by means of rings 4, as indicated more particularly in Figs. 1 and 2. The tubular member is furthermore provided with slots 5 6, as indicated more particularly in Fig. 4.
Slidably mounted within the respective ends of the tubular member 1 are cylindrical telescopic members 9 10, provided with finger-plates 7 8, whereby said cylindrical members may be pressed longitudinally toward the center of the comb. The two cylindrical members 9 10 are provided with teeth 11-12, secured rigidly in position and passing through the slots 5 6, as indicatedin Fig. 4.
Between the cylindrical members 9 10 is mounted a spiral compression spring 13, which normally forces the cylindrical members asunder to such an extent that the teeth 11 12 are forced into contact with the rings 4.
My inventionis used as follows: Supposing the several parts of the comb to be in the position indicated in Fig. 1, the operative grasps the finger-plates 7 8 between her fingers, and thereby forces them toward the center of the comb. The cylindrical members 9 10 are thus forced inward, compressing the spring 13 and causing the teeth 11 to be moved asunder from the teeth 3, as indicated more particularly in Fig. 2. The comb is now inserted in the hair after the manner usual with other combs, and the pressure upon the finger-plates 7 and 8 is relaxed. The tension of the spring 13 then forces the cylindrical members 9 10 asunder and in so doing forces the teeth 11 12 approximately into contact with the teeth 3. The result is that the device acts as a clamp, the hair being firmly held between the fixed and movable teeth.
When it is desired to remove the comb, all that is necessary is to force the finger-plates 7 and 8 toward each other, or, in other words, to squeeze the comb endwise.
This comb cannot readily be lost from the hair, and by its use the hair when once arranged is not likely to give trouble or annoyance.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A comb, comprising a tubular member provided with teeth disposed at right angles thereto, and also provided with slots, cylindrical members concentric with said tubular member and provided with teeth projecting through said slots, and a cylindrical spring likewise concentric to said tubular member, said spring engaging said cylindrical members and free to move the same relatively to said tubular member.
2. A comb comprising a tubular member provided with teeth disposed at right angles thereto, and also provided with slots disposed adjacent to said teeth, cylindrical members disposed within said tubular member and provided with teeth projecting through said slots, and means for moving said cylindrical members relatively to said back.
3. A comb comprising a tubular member provided with teeth and with slots exposed In testimony whereof I have signed 1115 adjacent to said teeth, cylindrical members name to this specification in the presence 0f 10 disposed within said tubular member and two subscribing witnesses.
provided with teeth, said teeth being parallel r with said teeth in said tubular member and JAMES OLIN projecting through said slots, and a spring \Vitnesses:
connected with said tubular member and with GEO. H. HEENSOCKEL,
said cylindrical members. I WILLIAM H. MEYER.
