HOLDER FOR HORSES MANES.

To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNARD C. MODON- ALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Vinnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Horses Manes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a device for holding the mane of a horse away from the collar and comprises a holder having a clamp at either end, and holders adapted to receive portions of the mane.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows the location of my improvements in connection with the mane of a horse. Fig. 2 is a face representation of the holder. Fig. 3 is an edge elevation. Fig. 4 is a face representat-ion of one end showing the coil spring expanded. Fig. 5 is a section on line a a Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a section on line b b Fig. 3.
My improved holder comprises the strap 1 to the ends of which are secured plates 2 and 3. The outer ends of these plates have upturned end plates 4 and 5 formed of separate pieces with their edges turned beneath the plates Fig. 6, and the rivets 6 and 7 connectk these ends and the plate to the strap. Washers 8 and 9 are located beneath the inner ends of the plates, and rivets 10 and 11 connect these ends with the strap. The plate 2 is provided with a notch 12 in its edge near its inner end, and a slide 13 engaging the plate 2 is adapted to enter the notch. A coiled spring 14 has one end connected to the end 4 and its other end is connected to the slide 13. The plate 3 is provided with a notch 15 in its edge near its inner end, and a slide 16 engaging the plate 3 is adapt-ed to enter the notch. A coiled spring 17 has one end connected to the end 5, and its other end is connected to the slide 16. When the slides 13 and 16 are located in the notches 12 and 15, the coiled springs 14 and 17 will be held extended as shown at Fig. 4, which will separate the coils of the springs.
The horses mane 18 near the collar 19 is placed in the coils of the spring 14 and the slide 13 is then released fro-m its engagement with the plate 2 which will permit the coils to close and clamp the hairs of the mane. The spring coil 17 then receives a portion of the mane near the head of the horse, and its coils are closed thereby clamping the mane in connection therewith. As shown at Fig. 1, the mane just in front of the collar 19 is held away from the collar which is the object of my invention.
I claim as my invention.
1. A mane holder comprising a strap, a plate secured to each end of the strap, a coiled spring supported by each plate, the two springs located in the lengthwise direction of the strap, and means for holding the springs extended.
2. A mane holder comprising a strap, two plates secured to the strap and having notches, a slide movable in connection with each plate and adapted to engage a notch in the plate, a coiled spring for each plate having one end connected to a slide and its other end to the plate.
