JOHN DEIIN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BOOK-COVER.
A SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 552,280, dated December 31, 1895.
Application led February 1l, 1895. Serial No. 538,025. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN DEHN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin BoolcCovers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in removable book-covers, the purpose of the improvement being to make such covers easily adjustable and detachable so that they can be quickly applied to any book and at the same time adjusted to the same.
To such end the invention consists of certain features of construction fully described below, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective showing one of my improved covers containing a book in its open position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the cover apart from the book. Fig. 3 is a section in the plane 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail view of a suitable clasp which I prefer to use upon the cover. Fig. 5 is a detail of a leaf-holder shown in connection with said cover, and Figs. 6, 7, 8, and 9 are detail views of extensible clasps or clamps designed to hold the book firmly within the cover.
In the drawings, my cover is shown as consisting of side boards A B, respectively, each consisting of three portions side by side, a ct a2, b bb2. These portions are riveted firmly together, the central part of the intermediate portion being cut away to allow of the insertion ofthe flexible back C, the same fitting into the boards loosely enough to slide freely back and forth. The portions of this back within the side boards are each provided with two series of perforations c, and the side boards each contain a pair of perforations CL3 53 the space between which is the same as the space between the two series of holes in the opposite ends of the back piece. The inner portions of the side boards are cut away transversely beneath these holes, as shown clearly in Fig. 2 at a4 b, and the groove formed is filled by a detachable cross-piece D bearing two studs d d, properly located to enter the two holes in the side piece. Screws CZ are provided for securing the cross-piece I) in place. The object of this arrangement is to hold the back piece Cin place and yet permit of the extension of the same to the extent of the distance between the holes.
These covers are intended for use upon books composed of loose papers rudely fastened together-as, for instance, they may be held together by a pin or rivet passing through them near one end, and in such a case the back piece C and plates H I are each provided with a hole through which the pin may project. A rivet is shown in the drawings, but it is not essential, as, in fact, the leaves may be entirely loose and separate from each other, such as statements, orders, receipts, &c. In order to secure the leaves to the cover I provide a clamp which will be described below. In Figs. 6, '7, 8, and 9 I show -four varieties of these clamps, the common feature of which is that they are all adjustable at both ends so that they may be tted upon as wide a range of books as the back piece C.
The clamp shown in Fig. 6 consists of two cross-pieces E F, connected'at their opposite ends by means of thumb-screws G G', so that they can be readily applied to the back of the book and firmly clamped to the same, the screw giving quite a range of adjustment to different thicknesses of books. Within the cross-pieces E F are Wider plates H I, turned at right angles at the ends h c' to embrace the edges-of the book. These plates give a greater bearing-surface for the cross-pieces E F and hold the back of the book in better shape. Fig. 7 shows a clamp differing merely in the form of the lower cross-piece F', the object being to conceal the end of the screw. Fig. 8 shows a different form of screw, the same consisting of a nut J and a nut K, externally screw-threaded to iit the nut J and internally screw-threaded to fit a screw L. The screw L engages the lower cross-piece F2 and the nut J the upper cross-piece. The advantage of this construction is that within a given length substantially double the limit of adjustment is obtained. In Fig. 9 two screws M N engage with a cross-piece E2 secured to the top cross-piece E and are screw-threaded to iit in a cross-bar O, in which turns a nut P,
threaded to a screw Q, which engages with the lower cross-piece F2. This construction also gives a double range of adjustment.
The free ends of the side pieces of the cover are provided with a spring-clasp secured to one and provided with means of engagement with the other. Fig. shows a clasp consisting of a barrel R screw-threaded into the side piece A and having confined within it a coiled spring o', to which is secured a bolt fr having a head r2. The side piece B of the cover has a slot r3, which will allow this head to pass through it when the head is properly turned, but which prevents the return of the head when the latter is turned at right angles. The spring R is intended to permit of the necessary adjustment of the cover of the different sizes of book.
Fig. Li shows another form of spring, the same consisting of a double coil S, riveted within the side piece A at s and adapted to hook over a hook s', secured to the side piece B. Said spring is provided with a bail s?, used as a convenient handle.
Upon the lower face of the upper cover A is pivoted a leaf-holder T, the same shown as consisting of a wire bent into the form of a rectangular bail with inturned ends 15, the inner extremities of which are again inturned in the plane of the bail, as is seen in Fig. 5 at t2. These inturned ends are held beneath two spring-plates t3, detachably secured to the upper cover by means of screws t4. This enables the entire device to be detached from the upper cover, and, when broken or worn out, portions replaced by new pieces. The springplates tend to hold the bail T against the upper cover in either of two positions, one being that shown in Fig. l and the other being upon the opposite sides of the spring-plates, said springs allowing, however, to yield to hold as l. The combination with the side pieces, A, B, of the back piece, C, containing the holes, c, c, the cross-bar, D, having the pins, (Z, d, and the screws, d, adapted to fasten the cross bar securely in place.
2. The combination with a detachable bool; cover of a back clamp consisting of the two cross-bars, E, F, provided with means for clamping them firmly upon the book and the plates, H, I, substantially wider than the cross-bars, E, F, provided with the inturned ends, 71 i, substantially as described.
3. The combination in a book cover and with proper side pieces, a back piece laterally adjustable with reference to the side pieces, of a back clamp adapted to fasten the cover to the book, said clamp consisting of two crossba'rs adj ustably secured together at both ends; substantially as described.
Ll. The combination with a detachable cover of a back clamp consisting of opposite cross pieces secured together at both ends by means of screw-adjusting devices consisting of a screw secured to one cross-piece, a nut internally threaded to said screw and turning in an intermediate cross-piece and a pair of screws connecting said cross-piece with the opposite cross-bar; substantially as described.
5. The combination with an adjustable book cover, of the double spring, S, secured to one of the side pieces, a hook upon the opposite cover adapted to engage the opposite end of the spring and a convenient handle for operating the same; substantially as described.
JOHN DENN.
