O. A. LEHMAN.
WAIST BELT CLASP. No. 319,276. r Patented June 2, 1885.
N. PETERS. FhulrrLiihogl-apher. Walhngiun. LIC1 llaman trarne 'artnr @prima OTTO A. LEHMAN, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK.
WAiSTB ELT CLASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,276, dated June 2, 1885.
' Application iiled March 25, 1885. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be ,it known that I, OTTO A. LEHMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vaist- Belt Olasps, of which the following is a specification, ret'- erence being had to the accompanying drawings.
rlhe invention relates to that class of waistbelt clasps which comprise two members adapted to be engaged with each other, and one of which is permanently secured to one end of the belt, while the other is constructed with slots for the reception of the other end portion of the belt, and is thereby adapted to slide on the belt and secure itself by cramp ing the belt over the edges of the slots.
The invention consists in a clasp composed of two members, one of which is provided with one or more staples and slots, as hereinafter described, and the other of which has one or more holes in it for the staple or staples to pass through for the reception of one or more tongues, which are attached to the belt, and which bypassing through the staple or staples make the clasp secure.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a face View of the terminal portions oi' a belt having my clasp. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a face View ot' the back member of the clasp. Fig. et is a side View of the same. Fig. 5 is a face view of the front member of the clasp. Fig. 6 is an edge view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The back member, A, of the clasp represented consists of a metal plate of a length slightly greater than the width of the belt, having near its side edges two slots, s s, for the passage of the belt O through it, and being provided with two staples, a a, which project from its front side.
The front member, B, consists simply oi' a .iiat plate of a length not greater than the width of the belt, having two holes, b b, for the reception of the staples a a.
The back member, A, having the belt (l passed through its two slots, s s, in such manner that the portion of the belt between the said slots is behind, as shown in Fig. 2, will, when the belt is in wear, retain itself in any position on the length thereof at which it may be placed by the cramping of the belt over the edges of the slots, but when the belt is not in wear or loose the said member may be slid along it, and therefore it provides for a universal adjustment to accommodate the slightest variations of girth and holds itself secure when adjusted.
The front member, B, is lirmly secured, as by rivets e e, on the outer face of the belt near one end, c, thereof, and holes are provided in the belt opposite tothe holes b b, and corresponding in form therewith. At the back of the holes b b there are represented strips of metal -plate t' t', which are secured by the same rivets c e, which secure the member B in place, the said strips serving to 11e-enforce the holes in the belt and to give a better hold to the rivets.
Near the end c of the belt, next to which the outer member, B, is permanently secured, there are secured to the outer face of the belt straps or tongues d d, of leather or other suitable fabric, or of metal, the said straps or tongues being of such width and so spaced as to permit them to pass through the staples t a when the latter are in the holes b b, and so prevent the withdrawal of the staples from the holes.
It may be mentioned that instead of the back member, A, having two staples, and the Vfront member, B, two corresponding holes,
one staple and one hole might be sufficient; and it may be further mentioned that when two staples are used the front member need have but one hole, provided it be long enough to receive both staples.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The belt-clasp herein described, consisting of the member A, having a staple or staples, a, projecting from its face, and also having the slots s, and the member B, having a hole or holes, b, adapted to receive said staple or staples, substantially as herein described.
OTTO A. LEHMAN.
