PATENTED PEB. 2l, 1905.
E. C. LEWIS. PLACKBT FASTENER AND SKIRT SUPPORTER COMBINED.v
APPLIGATION FILED APR.29,1904.
WITNESSES.
NITED STATES Patented February 21, 1905.
EDWIN C. LEWIS, OE DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
PLACKET-FASTENER AND SKIRT-SUPPOFITER COMBINED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 783,378, dated February 21, 1905.
Application filed lApril 29, 1904. Serial No. 205|477.
To all whom, it 777/04,/ concern.-
Beit known that I, EDWIN C. LEWIS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Placket-Fastener and Skirt-Supporter Combined, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in placket-fasteners and skirtsupporters combined and has for its object to make a placket-fastener in which the stays or locking members are entirely7 separate froml each other and of considerably less length than the placket-opening, thereby not destroying the hanging' of the skirt and insuring comfort to the wearer when sitting down, said fastener at the same time forming the means for supporting the skirt, a further object beingvtomake a fastener' in which stays are invisible when in use and to provide means dletachable from the waist for supporting the s iirt.
To this end the invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, and claimed in they specification, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view showing the A device as in use.y Fig. 2 is a perspective View showing one edge of the placket-opening turned back to better show the parts. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing a modified form of skirt-support with the parts detached. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the plate adapted to be secured to the shirt-waist.
A B are the two members of the placketfastener' secured to the adjacent edges of the placket-opening C, the member A being inclosed within the material of the skirt to entirely conceal the same, with its slotted upper end A projecting out through the top of the waistband and the heads of pins D E through the side ofthe material. The member B is sewed to the inside of the overlapping portion of the placket-opening to entirely conceal the same when in use and is provided with a transverse slot E and a vertical slot G at its upper and lower ends, respectively, both of said slots being formed with circular enlargements adapted to be slipped over the headed pins D E, the slot G being first engaged with the pin E, and then using it as a pivot the slot E is engaged with the pin D, the slot G being made slightly longer than necessary in order to insure its engagement with the pin E, and thereby prevent its accidental disengagement while closing the placket and locking it on the pin D.
His a perforated plate adapted to be sewed to the back of a shirt-waist and provided with a central headed pin I.
J is a vertical slot in the projecting end of the member A, provided with a circular enlargement adapted to be slipped over the headed pin I to support the skirt therefrom, and after the belt is in place the parts are entirely hidden from view.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modiiied form of removable waist attachment in which K is a plate provided with three headed pins L, adapted to project through the openings M in the waist, and N is a plate having a central aperture O and slots I), provided with circular enlargements adapted to be sprung over the pins L to detachably lock the plate K in position,` the placket-fastener being hooked to the central pin, as before described, and the slotted plates Q to the pins on either side to improve the hanging of the skirt and hold down the waist. both of said plates being sewed to the skirt-band on opposite sides of the placket-opening,
Having thus fully described my invention, what l claim is-H l. A placket-fastener and skirt-supporter combined, comprising a plate adapted to be secured to the Waist of the wearer, a headed pin carried by said plate, two separate members adapted to be secured to the adjacent edges of a placket-opening, one of said members being provided with slots having enlargements, and headed pins carried by the other member engaging said slots, said last-mentioned member provided with a slot at its upper end having an enlargement.
2. A placket-fastener and sl irtfsLipporter combined, comprising two separate members IOO adapted to be secured to the -adjacent edges of a placket-opening', one of said members being provided with a longitudinal and a transverse slot at its opposite ends, pins carried by the other member engaging said slots, said lastmentioned member provided with a slot at its upper end, and a plate secured to the waist of the wearer having a pin engaging said slot.
'3. A placket-fastener and skirt-supporter combined, comprising two separate members,
one of said members provided with a longif tudinal and a transverse slot, pins carried by the other member engaging said slot, one of said members provided with an opening near its upper end, a plate, headed pins on said plate, one adapted to be engaged by the opening in said member, and apertured plates adapted to be secured to the waistband of the skirt and engage said pins.
4. A placket-fastener and skirt-supporter combined, comprising two separate members adapted to be secured to the adjacent edges of a placket-opening, one oi' said members provided with a longitudinal and a transverse slot near its opposite ends, pins carried by the other member engaging said slots and having an opening near its upper end, a plate, pins on said plate', a second plate having openingsl engaglug said pins'and separate plates having apertures adapted to engage said pins.
5. A placket-fastener and skirt-supporter combined, comprising two separate members adapted to be secured to the adjacent edges of a placket-opening, one of said members provided with a longitudinal and a transverse slot having enlargements and headed pins carried by the other member fitting in said enlargements and engaging said slots, a plate, headed pins on said plate, a second plate having a central opening and openings having slots leading therefrom engaging said pins, apertured plates having slots leading therefrom to engage said pins, and one oi' said members having a slotted opening near its upper end adapted to engage one of said pins.
In testimony whereoi'- I aiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDI/VIN C. LEWIS.
