( )LAMP FOR SALES BOOK PADS.
APPLICATION FILED Au,G.29. |914.
A'rnr GEORGE lH. BAUGHMAN' .AND FRANK J'. SEMRLDEK, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 29, 1914. Serial No. 859,146.
T0 all Lelio/m, it may concern.'
Be itknown that we, GEORGE H. BAUGi-I- MAN and FRANK J. Smruwmr, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Sales-Book Pads, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
Our invention relates to what' are commercial'ly known as sales-books, that is binders for suitably and conveniently holding a pad of sales checks, sales tickets or the like such as are usually employed in mercantile establishments for memoranda of purchases made by customers. The pages or tickets of theselpads are adapted to be torn-out by the sales person making the sale and when a pad has been entirely used the stud thereof is adapted to be replaced by anotherpad which is inserted between the covers of the said-book after the said stub has been removed.
More particularly7 our invention pertains to the devices for removablyv clamping and holding the pad between the binding covers of the book member and its particular object Vis the provision of a clamp that is easy for the sales person to manipulate when removing or replacing a pad.
Another object is to construct a clamp of the type mentioned that will securely and firmly hold the pad when the latter is placed between its clamping jaws. A still further object is the provision of a clamp that is inexpensive to manufacture so that it will not materially add to the retail cost of the sales book.
These and other objects we prefer to accomplish by the means and in the manner hereinafter fully described and as more particularly pointedout in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification wherein similar reference characters. indicate the same parts in the various figures.
In the drawings z-Figure 1 is a perspective view. partlyfragmentary, of a salesbook in opened position showing our invention applied thereto and gripping a pad of sales checks.V Fig. :2 is a rear elevation of the clamping members, detached from the book and in their respective positions for clamping a pad. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the clamping members opened. Fig. -L is a transverse vertical section of the book taken on the line 4.-1 of Fig. 1.
YI'4`or the purpose cfu-convenience in describing our invention we have herein illustrated and described the same embodied in a. Sales-book, but it of course will be obvious to others skilled in the art to which it relates that the principles involved may be readily applied without alteration or change to binders for j loose-leaf ledgers, transferbooks, files and the like. 'e therefore desire it understood that such uses and applications are contemplated by us. l
Referring to the drawings A and B rep,- resent respectively the top and bottom covers -of a sales-book that are usually constructed of relatively stift' material and are hinged or connected together by means of 'a suitableV flexible back portion C, substantially as shown in Figs. 1 and -l of the drawings. Seeured upon the inside surface of cover B and disposed in a transverse plane substantially parallel with the back edge thereof is the stationary clamping jaw' or member 5 of the clamp. This stationary jaw 5 preferably comprises an elongated strip of angular sheet metal, substantially L- Patented Oct. 19, 1915.
shaped in 4cross-section that is so arranged that one of its members is disposed at a right angle to s aid cover and projects upwardly therefrom, while its opposite member, which is slightly upturned or flared as at 6 along its outer edge, is preferably secured to said cover by lneans of rivets 7 or in any other suitablemanner. The coperating or movable clamping jaw S is likewise preferably constructed of angular sheet metal of a substantially L-shape. as shown and is inverted or disposed so that its vertical member lies fiat against. and, as will hereinafter be described, is adapted to be clamped to the vertical upstanding portion of the lower or stationary jaw- The horizontal melnber of jaw S preferably slopes or is inclined slightly downwardly toward the adjacent cover B and its outer free edge is inturned or flared as at 9. AWhile it is not considered essential we desire to construct these clamping jaws so that one of their. flared edges (preferably the upper edge) lique or inclined slot 10 in the vertical or upright member otl jaw 5 and to cut. an oppositely inclined longitudinal slot 11 in the .corresponding vertieal member of jaw S. These slots renter of length of said jaws that portions of said slots'will be opposite and register with each other, and at the point ot' registry or intersection we insert a flattened sei-ew. bolt or similar element 12- transversely through them so that it will extend beyond the vertical plane of the outer surface ot' the clamping jaws. Bolt 12 is provided with an enlargement or head 13 upon its inner end and a knurled thumb nut 14 or the like is screwed onto its outerextended end for the purpose of locking the parts together. '1f desired, after the nut 14 has been placed upon the bolt 12 the outer end of the latter may be swayed over to prevent the accidental removal of the nut.
In operation, when it is desired to open the clamping jaws the nut is loosened and bolt 12'is moved toward the position shown in Fig. 3 which will cause the bolt to travel upwardly in slot 10 and downwardly in slot 11 until the ends of the slots are opposite each other in which position the jaws will have been separated to their full extent. The edge of a pad of sales-checks D may then be inserted between the jaws, after which the bolt 12 is adapted to be moved bodily in a. reverse direction until the same,
.acting as a wedge in oppositely inclined slots 10 and 11, will cause the approx1ma tion of the respective jaws and will securely clamp the pad, whereupon the nut 14 may be turned down on the bolt to securely lock the parts together. guide the movable jaw and prevent longitudinal movement of the same, we prefer to turn back the opposite end edges 15 of the vertical member of stationary jaw 5 to form i suitable gnideways in which the adjacent end edges ot' said movable jaw are adapted to travel and thereby retain the lat-ter in parallel relation.
lWhile we have illustrated and described certain specific instrumentalit-ies for carrying out our invention it of course will be obvious to others skilled in the art to which it relates that various changes and modifications may be made Without materially departing from the spirit thereof. We wish it understood therefore that such refinements are included within the. scope of our inven tion as expressed in the appended claims.
