EDWARD KIRIBY BOTTLE, OF NIAGARA FALLS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE CARTER- CRUME COMPANY, OF NIAGARA FALLS, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF ONTARIO,
CANADA.
MANIFOLIDING SALES-BOOK.
Patented Oct. 8,1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD KIRBY BOTTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Niagara Falls, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifolding Sales-Books, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to manifolding sales books and with regard to the more specific features thereof, to devices for holding carbon paper or the like.
One of the objects thereof is to provide a simple, practical and reliable holding means adapted to permit ready manipulation of the transfer sheet.
Another object thereof is to provide holding means of the above type adapted to lie flatly between the leaves.
Another object is to provide practical means of the above character adapted to permit easy and complete removal from between the leaves of the book and the interposition of the carbon or transfer sheet carried thereby between leaves at some other part of the book.
A further object thereof is to provide simple and eflicient carbon holdingmeans which may be readily operated by the thumb or fingers of the hand holding the book.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein are shown two'of the various possible embodiments of this invention, Figure 1 is a view in perspective showing the device with its parts assuming operative position. Fig. 2 is a detailed plan showing-the mounting of certain parts. Fig.3 is a similar detail view of a modification.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In order to render more fully and easily understood certain features of this invention, it may be here noted that in certain lines of business a salesman is often obliged to wait on several customers at one time or to add to a customers bill from time to time and it is dcsirable to provide for the ready transference of the carbon paper from 1ts position between the leaves of one set of record sheets to a position between the leaves of another set. It may also be noted that in the use of manifolding sales books the manipulation of the transferring element is a constant source of delay and annoyance. In constructions of the nature of that hereinafter described the above defect is remedied and the transferring element readily placed in any portion of the book.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, 1 represents the lower cover and 2 the upper cover of a holder for manifolding pads, connected by a flexible binding 3, to one of which parts is secured a clamping member 4 adapted to hold a record pad, comprising a plurality of original leaves as 5, and a plurality of duplicate leaves as 6, arranged in sets in any usual and well-known manner. A wire 7 having a portion thereof dis posed substantially parallel to an edge of the cover 1 and a portion offset therefrom which extends across the lower cover and is secured thereto in a manner adapting it to turn slightly about its axis, so that a carbon clip 8 carried by said first portion may be interposed between leaves at either the front or the back of the pad. This carbon clip 8 comprises two elongated mutually corrugated plates hinged together at 9, and provided with co-act-ing separable fastening means 10 of any suitable form, whereby the same may be separated to permit the insertion of a sheet of carbon paper, by which term is meant any transferring medium, in substantially the manner illustrated. It is obvious, of course, that any other suitable form of carbon paper holder or clip may be substituted therefor without departing from the scope of the other features of this invention, although it is believed that the construction illustrated and above described presents several advantages.
Preferably made integral with or at tached to one of the parts of the carbon paper clip 8 is a projecting flange 11, provided with a sleeve portion 12 adapted to fit over a portion of the wire 7, which extends parallel with the side of the pad, and
to be capable of rotation thereabout. After the parts are assembled in operative position the end of the wire is bent or otherwise deformed to securely rivet these parts in place. The wire 7 is preferably made of a more 'or less resilient material and provided with a bent portion 18 adapted to co-act with coverl so as normally to exert pressure upon the carbon clip 8 to hold the same in engagement with the sheet of paper on which it rests.
The manner of use of this device is substantially as follows: Assuming the book to be held in substantially the position shown in Fig. 1, with the original sheet resting upon the carbon sheet, and it is desired to insert the carbon sheet between the leaves of another set, by pressing down on flange 11 they carbon paper clip with the paper carried thereby is raised to the position shown by the dotted lines, displacing the original sheet previously resting thereon. The leaves of the various sets may then be rapidly turned backward or forward until the desired set is reached, whereupon the carbon clip will be permitted to fall back into normal position and the device is again ready for use. Resilient means may. be employed for returning the clip to normal position, although it is believed that the same is unnecessary for the satisfactory operation of the device. It may also be understood that the flange 11 may be placed at either the right or left hand side of the sales book holder, to be operated by the thumb or fingers, as desired, or for the convenience of either a right or left-handed writer.
Referring to the modification shown in Fig. 3, the sales book holder issubstantially the same as that in the embodiment already described. Secured to the lower end of the cover or holder is a wire 14. bent at rightangles to extend across the end of the cover or holder and run parallel to one of the sides thereof. This wire 14: is secured to the cover by suitable means such as fasteners 15. At the farther end of the wire 14 is pivoted a carbon holding clip 8, substantially the same as that above described, having at one end a projecting flange 16 adapt ed to be engaged by the thumb or fingers of the operator. It will be obvious that if desired the transverse portion of the wire 14 may be journaled at the upper instead of the lower end of the holder.
It may be noted that although the devices here shown are mounted'upon. a sales book cover or holder of a well known type and possess certain advantages in combination therewith, nevertheless in so far as the broader features of the invention are concerned, any desired form of mounting may be provided for the clip 8 and its associated parts, and the term sales book holder is used herein in a broad sense to denote any member associated with a sales book and adapted to serve as, a mounting for a device of this nature. 7
As many changes could be made in the above construction. and many apparently widely difierent embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A manifolding device comprising a cover, a resilient member having two portions, one of said portions extending along an edge of said cover, the other of said portions being journaled and extending transversely across said cover, and a clip disposed to rotate about the portion of said resilient member extending along the pad and to be raised upon rotation about said member.
2. A manifolding sales book holder comprising a cover, a wire bent to form two portions, one of said portions extending along the edge of said cover, the other of said portions extending transversely across said cover and journaled thereto, and a clip having a portion surrounding the portion of said resilient member extending along said cover and adapted to be raisedupon rotation thereabout.
3. A manifolding sales book holder comprising a cover, a clip-carrying member having a portion extending along the edge of said cover and another portion extending transversely of said cover and journaled thereto, and a carbon clip comprising a sleeve adapted to fit over the portion of said clip-carrying member extending along the edge of said cover, and plates for holding a carbon sheet, said carbon clip being adapted to rotate about said clip-carrying member and to be raised upon rotation thereabout.
4. A manifolding sales book holder comprising a cover, a resilient member comprising two portions, one of said portions extending along the edge of the cover for only part of its length, the remainder of the edge being free, the other of said portions extending transversely across said cover and journaled thereto,- a clip disposed to rotate about the portion of said resilient member extending along the edge of the cover, and means to raise said clip.
5. A manifolding sales book holder, comprising a member arranged parallel to a longitudinal edge thereof and having an offset portion extending substantially perpendicular to said edge, means journaling said offset portion to said holder, and a carbon clip pivoted on said member, said offset portion bein arovlded with an eccentric ortion a .l P
adapted normally to press said clip down upon the leaves of a book supported by said holder.
6. A manifolding sales book holder, comprising a member secured parallel to an edge thereof, a carbon clip pivoted on said member, a sleeve rigidly secured to said clip through which said member passes, a lateral projection formed on said sleeve adapted to be engaged by the thumb to swing said clip about said member, said member having an offset portion extending substantially perpendicular to said edge and comprising means adapted normally to press sald clip into resilient contact with the leaves of a 15 book supported by said holder, and means adapted to journalthe latter upon said holder.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
