Specificationot Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19,1909.
Application filed .Qecember 18,, 1907. Serial No. 402,037.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD CARNEY and EDWARD STINE, a subject of the King of Great Britain and a citizen of the United States, respectively, residing at Glendale and Richmond Hill, respectively, both in the county of Queens and Stateof New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in- Manifolding-Pads, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description,'such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to manifolding pads and more particularly to sales books and the like.
One of the objects thereof is to provide a simple and elficient type of sales book in which the pad is readily mounted upon the holder or supporting device and securely held in position.
Another object is to provide a bookof the above nature adapted to permit an entire leaf to be detached in use.
Other objects are toenhance the convenf ience of manipulation and compactness and simplicity of construction of sales books.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.-
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of par-ts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope'of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown one of various possible embodiments of this invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the book in condition for use; Fig. 2 is a front view of a .ortion of the book; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken sub as otherwise during the rapid manipulation of the book, thetendency of the pad to fall out or become displaced is aconstant source annoyance. It may alsov be noted that where devices of this general nature are in almost constant use, as 111 large retail establishments, it is necessary to frequently:
replace the pads as the same are consumed, and unless this can be quickly and easily accomplished there is a considerable waste of time for this purpose. If it be attempted to use a strong spring clasp to grip the stub end. of'the pad, it sometimes, and particularly when manipulated by saleswomen, pre sents considerable ditficulty in opening.
The above and other defects are eliminated and many positive advantages attained in constructions of the nature of that hereinafter described.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing, there is shown a back or support 1 which is, preferably continued as at 2 to form a cover for the book. Mounted upon back 1 is a pocket 3 preferably formed of sheet metal and comprising the wings 4 adapted to engage each side of the pad and an abutment 5 flanged as indicated at 6.
The pad proper may be, in so far as certain broad features of this invention are con cerned, of any desired type, but as herein shown comprises the pairs of original and duplicate leaves 7 and 8 folded so as to present an edge at 9 and preferably weakened along a line at this point. A transfer sheet 10 is mounted at the head of the pad so as to be inserted between each pair of leaves 7 and 8 and transmit the inscription from one to the other in the usual manner.
Retaining means, which preferably take the form of a staple 11, pass through the several leaves of the pad adjacent the edge 9 and hold the same loosely so as to permit each pair of leaves to be detached as by tearing along the dotted line 12. In order to achieve this end, the leaves are not pinched or clamped by the staple and the same is so positioned as upon the leaves be ingdrawn away to permit their complete removal without the waste and other disadvantages attendant upon a stub portion being left.
Secured to the back 1, as by the rivet 13, is a spring'member 1 1 provided with bends or corrugations 15 and 16 upon its upper and lower surfaces respectively. These bends are adapted respectively to interlock with the upper and lower transverse por-' ing any supporting or holding element of whatsoever type. It may also be noted that the individual pad is provided with a stiffening member 19 upon its rear surface whereby the same is held in shape prior to its insertion in the holder.
The method of use of the above-described embodiment of this invention is substantially as follows :Assuming that a pad is to be placed in position upon the back 1,
the lower end thereof is forced within the pocket 3 until the upper and lower portions of the staple snap into the corresponding recesses or bends 15 and 16 in the spring mem ber 14:. As the pad reaches this position it substantially abuts against the member 5 and its upper end slips within the flange 18,
which aids in holding it securely in posit1on. The side wmgs or flanges 4: prevent any lateral movement of the pad and the staple 11 is so held as to form a rigid retaining means for each individual leaf of the pad. The pad is then used in the customary manner andsubsequent to inscription the used leaves are snapped away from the staple 11, tearing free therefrom and may be separated one from another and any desired disposition made thereof. The staple is securely held at all stages of the use of the pad and, upon the leaves becoming exhausted, it is readily removed together with the member 19 by simply raising the upper end from the flange 18 and drawing it from beneath the spring. Another pad may then be substituted, being merely forced into position and thus consuming a minimum of time.
It may be noted that in the action of the spring 14 the same is guided by the shoulders 20 of the member 5 and its downward movement is limited by the portion 21 of this member, about which it passes as best shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. In this manner, the spring is guided and held against lateral movement and, by reason of its downward movement being limited, it
cannot be strained or distorted in this direction so .as to render its action less efiicient. It will thus be seen that there is provided a device of the simplest and most inexpensive construction which, nevertheless, achieves the objects of this invention. As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely difierent embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
