Description

No. 863,462 P ATENTED AUG. 13, 1907. 0. $1 1110;
PAPER FILE.
APPLICATION FILED MAE. 26, 190?- To JOHN DOE GROEERIES, 172 WEst WITNESS UNITED STATES CHARLES SPIRO, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PAPE R-FILE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 13, 1907.
Application filed March 26,1907. Serial No. 364,657.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES SrIRo, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Files, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a paper file and particularly to a devicefor firmly binding a number of sheets of paper together and which will permit the removal of any sheet when desired.
The invention has for an object to provide opposite clamping jaws mounted for movement transversely toward and from each other together with a locking device for holding said jaws together which device may be provided with suspending means so that the bills, papers or other sheets carried by the file can be hung up, and the weight thereof assists in tightly gripping them within the file.
Other and further objects of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawing:Figure 1 is a perspective showing the application of the invention; Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a rear elevation; Fig. 4 is a detail perspective of the parts separated.
Like numerals refer to like parts in the several views of the drawing.
The numeral 1 designates the file which may be of any desired material, size or length convenient for the sheets to be retained therein. The file consists of the opposite clamping jaws 2 and 3, the former being adapted to receive the latter and retain it against longitudinal movement. Each of these jaws is formed at one longitudinal edge with an inturned clamping face 4 curved at its opposite ends 5 to facilitate the introduction of the sheets therein by a sliding movement longitudinally of the file. The jaws are preferably formed of rigid material and have the flat or plane face which is particularly convenient for the application of advertising matter or other announcements to be placed thereon. Each of the jaws is also provided at one longitudinal edge with a clamping flange 6 provided with the slots 7 which are disposed diagonally to the length of the file and in opposite directions to those upon the other jaw. The jaw 2 is provided at each end with the upturned lug 8 which embraces the ends of the flange 6 of the opposite jaw and retains it against longitudinal movement. For the purpose of moving these jaws toward and from each other an operating rod 9 of any desired configuration may be provided, preferably angular and disposed within the jaws, while one end of this red is provided with any desired suspending device, for instance, the eye or hook 10, as shown.
This rod is connected to the jaws by means of projections 11 extending through the slots and into the rods, and in the present case these constitute screws threaded into the body of the rod. It will be seen that in the longitudinal movement of this red the jaws 2 and 3 will be shifted transversely or laterally toward and from each other to open and close the file for the insertion of the sheets therein.
The operation of the invention will be apparent from the foregoing description and it will be seen that a number of sheets of paper, such as bills, newspapers and other sheets may be connected together and suspended in convenient position for use without being rumpled or otherwise damaged as the clamping jaws exert a firm tension for the extended length along the sheet and when released the sheets may be removed in perfect condition. The suspension of the device from the operating rod causes the weight of the sheets to assist in holding the papers in position, and any tension applied to these papers or to the jaws causes them to grip even more tightly. The construction 'of the jaws permits their convenient and economical manufacture and assemblage, while the inclination of the slots may be varied to allow any desired opening of the jaws.
Having. described my invention and set forth its merits what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A paper file comprising opposite jaws having parallel clamping edges and overlapping portions, a longitudinally movable member, and means operatively connecting said member to the overlapping portion of each jaw for lateral movement thereof toward and from the other jaw.
2. A paper file comprising opposite jaws having parallel clamping edges and overlapping portions, a longitudinally movable member, means operatively connecting said member to the overlapping portion of each jaw for lateral movement thereof toward and from the other jaw, and a suspending device upon the extended end or said member.
3. A paper file comprising opposite jaws having parallel clamping edges, an independently movable operating rod connected to both of said jaws for moving them transversely toward and from each other, means upon said rod for suspending the file, and means carried by one jaw to prevent longitudinal movement of the opposite jaw thereon.
4. A paper file comprising opposite jaws each formed at one side with a gripping edge and at the opposite side with a slotted clamping flange, and a sliding operating bar disposed on said flanges and having projections extending through the slots thereof.
5. A paper file comprising opposite jaws each formed at one side with a gripping edge and at the opposite side with a slotted clamping flange, an operating bar having projections extending through the slots of said flanges, and lugs at the opposite ends of one flange to embrace the ends of the cooperating flange.
6. A paper file comprising opposite jaws each formed at one side with a gripping edge and at the opposite side with a slotted clamping flange, an operating bar having projections extending through the slots of said flanges,
lugs at the opposite ends of one flange to embrace the ends of the cooperating flange, and a suspending device disposed at one end of the operating bar:
7. In a paper file, opposite jaws each provided with a contracting clamping flange having a slot disposed diagonally to the length of the jaw, the slots in contacting flanges being in opposite directions, a sliding operating rod disposed upon said flanges, and a projection therefrom extending through said slots.
8. In a paper file, opposite jaws each provided with a clamping flange having a slot disposed diagonally to the length of the jaw, the slots in contacting flanges being in opposite directions, an operating rod, and a headed screw extending through said slots and into said operating rod.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence 01 two Witnesses.
CHARLES SPIRO.
