Description
W. A. GRIMES.
NEWSPAPER BINDER. APPLICATION HLED MAY 24. 1920.

WILLIAM A. jean/ins, or; RICHMOND, YINYDIQANA.
NEWSPAPER-BINDER. i
Applicationdiled May 24, 1920.: Serial ire-383,766.
To all whom it mag concern."
Be it known thatI, WILLIAM A; GnrMns, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Richmond,-inthe'county of Wayne, State "of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Newspaper Bindeiyof which the following is a-full, clear-,and comprehensivc specification and exposition, the
same being such as will enable-others to make and use the same With-exactitude.
The object of my present invention,
broadly stated, is to provide a newspaper binder which" is light. in weight, comparatively small in size, positive in its results, easily'operated'and controlled, quickly and easily attached and detachedfto and from a newspaper, and hich ca'n'be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low price. The particular -objectin viewis the provision of a device for securingtogetherthe Ivarious sheets'of a newspaper or the like whereby the various pages will'be retained intact and whereby the leaves may be turned in thesamemanner as a book or magazine,
"at-the same time enablingone to retain the paper in extended condition when held in ones hands. g
It is alsoto be understood that the de [vice is applicable for temporarilybinding :documents, and for retaining blank sheets of paper in tablet is form,and for various other purposes to which it is applicable.
together various kinds of papers and legal Other objects and advantages of my invention will be brought out in the course of the following description, and that which is new will bcvcorrelated in theappended claim. I p V V v Thepreferre'd means for carrying out the purposes of my invention n a practical manner is shown inthe acc'oi'npanying. drawings,
, Figure 2 is a face side elevation showingthein which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device.-
mouth open ready to receive a" paper. Figure 3 is also a face side elevation, but showing the mouth closed, that is with. the lips clamped together. Figure lshows the device as clamped upon the upper portion of a newspaper. Figure 5 shows the device as clamped upon the central portion of a newspaper. Figure 6 is a cross section of themain portion'or body of the device, as taken on the line 66 of Fig. 2. Figure 7 is a face side view of one of the clamps. Figure 8 is an end elevation of one of the clamps.

And Figure 9 is an lendelevati'on offtlie'f body portion.
' Similar'indexes' denote like parts through- 1 out theseveral views. j y l Q} In order that the construction, the 'opera-;
tioii, and the advantages of my" invention may be fullyunderstoodand appreciated I Wlll l1OW take up a' detailed my invention, in which I will set forth the same as fully V I may.
' Said; fs id'es toward each other. EX?
ing 'the auxiliary lip iii'embers 8 a' id'O, to From the forward'edges of the members 8 'and'9 the material is. bent Referring now to the drawings in detail The body of my device is formed from' a single piece of very thin but highlyresilient sheet metal, andit comprises the, two sides land '2.'-whichare disposed at acute angles description of x andas, comprehensiv'ely as v at 'right-z'tngles and into contact with the jaw members 4 and '5 thereby forming there spective auxiliaryfjaw-members lO'and 11.;
Atthe-Qjunctures of the-member 19 with tl e'side" 1 the material is turned inward at r f an acutea glfiiboth tothemember 1 and't'o the member-'10; thereby providing the fin 7. .12. Likewise at'thejunctures of themember 11 with-the side 2 the material'is turned in wardat an acute-angle both to'the' member All-ofsaid piece-of material, and are therefore integral witheach othenthe thickness .ofwhich is shown exaggerated in i ig. 6, in order to show the :parts more clearly,
and in practice the central portion 3 acts parts are formed.- of" a single 1 as. a spring hinge, while the doubling of the jaws and; the lips, and the interpositionfof the'fins, renders said portion comparatively stiff and ,2 and to the member 1 1,- the'reby providing less liable to bend laterally. Said descripif tion refers' particularly to the central portion of the body. I Starting, half way-between the center of the body abovedescribed the jaw mem for instance, and the ends bers a and 5 decrease in width to a vanishing point at the extreme ends of the body, and as the lips 6 and 7 are retained parallel with each other and the same distance apart throughout the length of the body, therefore the sides 1 and 2 become oiiset inward forming the shoulders 14- 'and 15 and thereby forming the wedge-shaped inclines 16 and 17 which are brought practically into contact with the respective lips 6 and 7.
Two clamp members are provided for each body member, each clamp comprising a curved central portion 18 to surround the parts 1, 2 and 3 at the ends of the body, and having inturned ofi'sets 19 and 20 to engagethe shoulders 14 and 15, and having terminal flanges 21 and 22 to contact with the inclines 16 and 17, respectively.
At the extreme ends of the body the ma terial forming the lips 6 and 7, and the inclines 16 and 17, is turned out at right angles forming the stops 23 and 2% for the clamps to engage with as hereinafter explained.
4 In practice the clamps should be slid outward in contact with the stops 23-and 24:, which will permit the lips to be spaced apart as in Fig. 2, whereby the inner edges of a newspaper A may be placed between the lips, after which the clamps are to be slid toward each other as in Fig; 3 which manifestly will force the lips toward each other and into clampingcondition with the paper. I
The device may be attached to any part of the inner edge of the newspaper, preterably on the upper half as in Fig. 4, or in the center as in Fig. 5, orjit may be attached to the lower half, or a device may be employed on the upper half and another clamp on the lower half.
When the device is attached it is evident that it may be grasped with ones left-hand, thereby enabling one to hold the paper in proper condition for reading, and enabling one to turn the leavesas with a book, and also preventing the leaves from becoming separated and retaining them in consecutive order as long as desired. 7
When one desires to remove the device 7 it is only necessary to slide the clamp members outward to their limits, which of course will release the paper.
I desire that it be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction and the shape of the various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention and without sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having now fully shown and described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the 'United States, is V A newspaper binder comprising in combination a body formed of very thin and highly resilient sheet metal, the same being substantially U-shaped in cross section forming sides which are. disposed at acute angles with relation to each other and each terminating in a jaw member which extend toward each other, lip members extending centerward and rearward from the edges of the jaw members, auxiliary lip members formed at the'rear edges of the lip members by doubling the. material upon itself, aux-.
iliary jaw membersformed by bending the material at right-angles, at the forward edges, into contact with the jawsmembers, fins formed by turning the material in ward at right angles, means whereby the jaw members are tapered to a vanishing point. at the extreme ends of the body while the lips are retained parallel with eachother and of the same thickness throughout, stops formed at the extreme ends of the body, all of said parts being formed of a single piece of material; and a clamp for each end-portion of the body, each clamp comprising a curved portion and having inturned offset portions and terminal flanges whereby the clamps will fit on the body and are slidable thereon for opening and closingthe lips, all substantially as shown and described, and tor'the purposes set forth. l c
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM "A. GRIMES,
lVitnesses Rona. W. RANDLE, R. E. HANDLE.
