LOOSE-LEAF BINDER.
Application filed February 3, 1915.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, FRED E. CARDY, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Loose-Leaf Binders, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to loose leaf binders, and especially to a type of loose leaf binder shown and described in my application for patent, Serial No. 872,336, filed November 16, 19M.
An object of the invention is to provide a loose leaf binder which shall have all the advantages of the binder of my said other application, and in addition shall be thinner and so occupy less space when a series of binders are piled one upon another.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a plan of a portion of a loose leaf binder embodying my present invention; Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same; Fig. 3 1s a cross section taken on line 33 in Fig. 1, said Fig. 3 being on an enlarged scale; Fig. t is a view of a detail of construction.
In the drawings I show a portion of a loose leaf binder comprising two covers 1 and 2, with intervening leaves or sheets of paper or other material 3. The covers 1 and 2 and the leaves 3 are provided with elongated apertures or openings 44, and
through these openings a flexible connector or cord 5 is extended, the ends of said cord 5 being conveniently provided with metal tips 66. Cooperating clasp members 0011- veniently consisting of socket members 7 and stud members 8 are provided, the socket members 7 being mounted upon or in the upper cover member 2, and the plug members 8 being preferably carried by the ends of the cord or flexible connector 5. By mounting the plug and socket members 7 and 8 in this way it will be seen that the socket member 7 may be set substantially in the cover 2 and the stud member 8 substantially inserted into the same, so that the latter projects but very little above the cover 2. This permits the binder to be made very much thinner than would be the case if the stud members 8 were mounted upon the cover 2 and the socket members 7 carried by the cord. It will also be seen that objectionable projections are avoided,

the members 8 projecting but very little above the cover 2. The stud members 8 are preferably mounted slidably upon the ends of the cord 5, so that they or either of them may be shifted longitudinally along said cord and thus permit the effective length of the cord to be varied. This permits the 'number of leaves 3 to be increased or decreased at W111, and the bmder drawn up tightly to accommodate such change in the number of leaves, this being accomplished by shifting the position of one or both of the stud members 8 along the end or ends of the cord 5. Said cord 5 is engaged and pinched by a stud member 8 when the same is inserted in a socket member 7, so as to cause a frictional engagement of said cord 5 so as to prevent movement of the same relatively to the member 8 when the latter is in engagement with the member 7. Thus the binder may be held firmly in a tight condition as shown in Fig. 2, with the two members 88 engaged with the two members 7-7. The member 8 is desirably provided with a closed top as shown which top is an addition to the usual stud clasp member as found in the art, the ordinary stud member being open opposite the stud port-ion by reason of the fact that such stud members are usually secured to the article which is to be engaged by the clasping of the two members. The socket member 7 is preferably set in the cover 2 as best shown in Fig. 3 with the edge portions of said member 7 extending or projecting moderately along the inner and outer surfaces of the cover 2. The members 8 are of such size relatively to the apertures 41: that said members 8 may be passed through said apertures so as to permit the cover 2 to be removed and more or less leaves 3 taken out or added.
It will be understood that this form of connection may be used for purposes other than the oneherein set forth. It will also be understood that changes and modifications may be made without departing from with the cover members, of socket members carried by one of said cover members, a flexible cord passing through apertures in said cover members and stud members carried by the ends of said cord and slidably mounted upon the same, said stud members being engaged frictionally with said cord when said stud members engage said socket members.

In a loose leaf hinder, the combination of members forming a cover, a socket member mounted in one of said cover members, said socket member having projecting flanged portions extending along the inner and outer surfaces of one of said covers, a stud member having a flange corresponding to the flange portions of said socket member, a member securing the covers together, said stud and socket members engaging the member between them to secure said covers together.
ei. In a loose leaf binder the combination of a flexible connector, and a stud member carried by the connector and constructed to secure the connector to the binder, having a sliding engagement with said connector and said member being positioned upon the connector transversely thereto.
The combination of a flexible connector, a stud member having a sliding engagement with said connector, and a socket member adapted to engage the stud member, said stud and socket members frictionally engag-r ing said connector when engaged with one another.
6. In aloose leaf hinder the combination of a flexible connector, stud and socket mem{ bers constructed to secure said flexible con-j nector between them, said stud member be ing movable along'said connector by means of a transverse aperture provided in said stud member.
7. A loose leaf binder comprising in combination, apertured cover members, a flexible member passing through said apertures, socket members carried by one of said cover members, a stud member carried by said flexible member at each of its opposite ends,
and each adapted to engage a socket member to clamp said flexible member between it and the socket.
8. A loose leaf binder comprising in combination, apertured cover members, a flexible member having an end secured to one of the cover members and passing through said apertures and being movable with relation to said cover members, a socket carried by one of said cover members, a stud member carried by said flexible member and adapted to engage the socket member and to clamp said flexible member between it and the socket.
9. A loose leaf binder comprising in eombination, apertured cover members, a flexible member passing through the aperture of said cover members and being movable with relation thereto, a socket carried by one of said cover members, a stud member having a transverse aperture carried by said flexible member, and adapted to engage the socket member and to clamp said flexible member between it and the socket.
