convenient and efiicient newspaper file or device for holding newspapers, so that they will be securely bound together and admit of the pages being read consecutively; and the invention consists in the employment of two sticks of anyrequisite length, and having sharp or angular edges, between which the folded edges of the papers are placed and securely held by means of a clamping device.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents my invention as applied to a file of newspapers. Fig. 2 represents the separated ends of the holder or file showing the method of clamping the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of one end of the file. Fig. 4 is a slotted plate that forms a part of the clampin g device.

The holder A is composed of two sticks, a b, of semi-cylindrical form in cross-section, and to each end of one of the sticks a is secured a thin metal plate, C, provided with a slot extending halfway across the diameter of the same. To each end of the other stick b is attached a metal rod, d, as shown in Fig. 2, which projects beyond the ends of the stick, and has on its outer end a screw-thread, upon which is fitted a nut or screw-clamp, D. The rod 01 is placed centrally between the two sticks, so that the inner end of the clamp D willfit upon the ends of the sticks when they are closed together to bind the papers.

In operation, the two sticks a b being first separated, the papers are inserted between them at their folded edge, as shown in Fig. 1. The sticks a b are then pressed together, the sharp edges of the same holding the papers firmly throughout their entire length, and the clamp D is screwed tightly down upon the slotted plate C, thus binding the papers firmly together. The slotted plate C admits ot' the two sticks a b being separated sufficiently to hold and bind a number of papers-as many as it may be desired to have upon the file at once for convenience of handling.

Pins 0 are used, as in the ordinary newspaper-holder, for more readily securing the papers in place.

In the ordinary newspaper-file the papers are secured together at their centers, one-half being on each side, so that as the papers accumulate it is inconvenient to refer back to papers of earlier date than that last put on- By means of my invention this difficulty is obviated, and each page of each paper filed may be read consecutively. The papers are also less liable to become torn and separated than when attached to the ordinary holder in use.

I do not claim the use of two sticks for filing papers, for I am aware that such have been used; but

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In combination with the sticks a b, the slotted plate C, the screw-rod d, and a clamp or nut, D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.-
