RICHARD KOLB, 0F BAMBERG, GERMANY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,258, dated January 13, 1903.
Application filed July 5, 1901. Serial N0- 67,083- (No model.)
To aoZZ whom it may concern:
I Be it known that I, RICHARD KOLB, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing in the city of Bamberg, in the Kingdom of Bavaria, Germany, have'invented new and useful Improvements in Letter-Files and Registers for Papers or Documents, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates vto letter-files, and more especially to such as are provided with indexes; and the object thereof is to provide a file or holder having sheets or boards marked with letters of the alphabet and clamps or holders turning on centers to secure the papers in the divisions between said sheets or boards firmly together without the necessity of perforating or otherwise mutilating the papers to be filed; and a further object is to so construct the file that the divisions may receive any desired number of papers and that any of them may be removed or replaced with ease and despatch.
The invention essentially consists of providing each sheet or board comprising the file with a slit near to and parallel with the back of the file, so that papers to be filed may be inserted with their left-hand edge into the slit and held there by the edges or flaps formed by the slit. These edges or flaps, together with the inserted papers in each division, are clamped in place by means of a two-part clamp, of which the upper part is movable to allow the insertion or removal of any paper desired.
My invention will be more fully understood taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the file, showing a cover thrown open, one sheet of paper inserted in the file, and the clamp in clamping position. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, showing two boards and a cover held together by leather insets, the boards being provided with slits and clamps; and Fig. 3 is a view of the clamp detached from the board and with the upper movable blade open.
Referring now to the drawings for a further description of my invention, a represents the sheets or boards, which are bound together at the left-hand edge by a doubled cloth inset b, forming an extensible back to allow of the insertion of any desired number of papers in a division between two sheets or boards a. In each sheet or board a and near the left-hand edge thereof is provided a slit 0 d, reaching nearly to the top and bottom edges'of said sheet. The papers or documents 9 are inserted by one edge into this slit, so that one part lies above and the other part below the sheet a to efiect a preliminary fastening of the inserted paper.
Each sheet a of the file is provided with a metal clamp to hold the inserted papers in position, and this clamp consists of the shank f and blade g. The shankfis secured in any suitable manner to the sheet a; but preference is given to the mode of fastening shown in Figs. land 3, in which the sheet a'is provided with a slot i, so that the shank f of the clamp can be inserted and fastened to the back and top of the sheet a and the cloth inset 19 'by means of clenches passing through holes is. (Shown in Figs. 1 and 3.) The blade 9 of the clamp is pivotally connected at one end to the shank f by means of a stud h. This clamp f g serves to hold the papers 10 inserted in the slit 0 d tightly together and in such a way. that easy reference or reading of any filed paper may be had. To remove from or insert new papers into the file, the upper part g or the clamp is opened to release the pressure on the edge of the slit ed. The slit 0 d is important, as the inserted. loose papers are fairly held in place until it is desired to secure them by the clamp. If such papers were merely clamped at one or two points and not, as in my improved file, along the whole left-hand edge, they would be liable to be mutilated or torn.
There may be any desired number of sheets or boards a with clamps g f used to constitute a file, and a cover on may be attached to the cloth insets in the same manner as the boards are to each other, as will be readily understood from Fig. 2. v i
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- l. A combined file and register composed of two or more sheets a, an expanding back between each two sheets a, a slit in each'of said sheets a, through which the papers are inserted, and a clamp to press the inserted papers against one side of the sheet a, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A combined file and register composed of two or more sheets a, an expanding back between each two sheets a, a slit in each of said sheets a, through which the papers are inserted, and a clamp for each sheet a, comprising the shankffastened to the sheet a, and the l I blade 9 pivotally secured to the shank f, sub- 10 stantially as and for the purposes set forth. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two Witnesses.
