Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, EDGAR J AY, merchant, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at 16 Albion Buildings, Aldersgate street, London, E. Q, in the city of London, England, have lnvented certain new and useful Improvements in Binders for Loose-Sheet Books, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in the binding or clamping together of the sheets of loose sheet books such as note books, ledgers, photograph, stamp, or postcard albums, letter files or the like, and other books requiring the removal and interchanging of such sheets and has for its object to provide means for readily removing one or more of the sheets and replacing them, or others in substitution therefor, firmly and securely in position between the covers of the book. For this purpose I fix to the in side of the board forming the cover to which the sheets are to be bound and at one side of the same, near the back or folding edge, a strip or bar of metal or other suitable material, formed at one end with a flange at right angles thereto, and to the outer end of this flange is hinged a second metal strip or bar whose other end is formed with a notch. To the corresponding end of the first named strip or bar is pivoted a catch which when turned into its locked position engages with the said notch of the hinged bar and is formed with a horizontal flange which bears upon the latter for causing it to clamp or grip the sheets between it and the bar fixed to the cover. The latter bar is also provided with two or more vertical pins which pass through holes made in the sheets to be bound and also through holes in the hinged or clamping bar when the same is locked. The sheets are thus securely held or bound together by the said pins and the clamping bar holding them in position thereon; and in order to remove one or more of the sheets the pivoted catch is turned back, thus freeing the clamping bar and permitting of its being turned up out of engagement with the pins, thereby allowing the sheets to be drawn off the latter.

Instead of a pivoted catch at one end I may employ a catch at each end pivoted to the bar or to the board or cover to which the sheets are bound, the clamping bar being in this case separate and formed with a notch at each end for engaging with both the catches when in their locked positions. And in order that my invention may be clearly understood reference is made to the accompanying sheet of drawings in which Figure 1 is an end view of a loose sheet book with the covers closed, Fig. 2 is a cross section of the same partly broken away, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the binding device and cover with the leaves omitted, and Fig. 4, is a plan of the device. Fig. 5 is an end view of the device showing the pivoted catch, and Fig. 6 shows one end of the device with the catch open and the clamping and fixed bars in section. Fig. 7 is a side view of the device showing the pivoted catch open and the clamping bar raised for the purpose of removing or of inserting a sheet or sheets. Fig. 8 is a similar view showing a pivoted catch at each end, and Fig. 9 is a plan of the top or removable clamping bar.

The loose sheets 9 to be bound together are previously pierced with holes for filing them on, or engaging them with, the pins f, and after the sheets have been thus filed the bar 03 is turned down upon them thus engaging the pins f with the holes d in the bar. The catch 6 is then turned up so as to cause its vertical arm to engage with the notch (Z while its horizontal flange 6 lies upon the top of the bar cl thus securely locking the latter and clamping it down upon the sheets 9. By this means the said sheets are securely held in position on the pins 7", and cannot be removed unless the bar d is unlocked and raised, as shown in Fig. 7 in which position the sheets are free for disengagement, and removal, from the said pins. Fresh sheets may also be inserted and bound together by engaging the holes formed therein with the pins f and clamping the bar cZ upon the same by turning the catch 0 into its vertical or locked position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 6. 7 p

The pivoted catch .6 may be fitted at both ends of the device, as shown in Fig. 8, instead of at one end only; In this case the upper bar d is separate from, instead of being hinged to the device, and. the said bar is formed with a notch d at each end for each of the pivoted catches a toiengage with when turned into their lockedlpositions, as shown, for clamping the bar upon the sheets 9.,

Having now fully described the nature of my said invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is. V

Improvements in loose sheet books-consisting' of a. bar or. strip of metal, or other suitable material, formed at one-end with a vertical flange to thetop of which is hinged a second baror strip, the first-named bar being attached to the cover of the book and being provided with two: or more vertical pins whichpass through holes formed in the sheets to be bound as Well as through-holes in the hinged bar, the latter bar being held in its locked position by a catch pivoted to the other end of, the fixed bar and engaging with a notch in the end of the hinged bar, the loose-sheets being thus securely held by the pins between the said bars, substantially as herein described andshown., t,
