UNITED STTES ater DF'FICE.
CHARLES M. CLARK, OF HAVRE DE GRACE. MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO LOOK CLIP AND FOLDER COMPANY, INCORPORATED, A CORPORATION OF MARYLAND.
LOOSE-LEAF oovnn.
Application filed iFebruar-y 11, 1924. Serial No. 692,081.
1 all whom it may concern 'Be it known that CHARLES M. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Havre de Grace, in the county of Harford and State of Maryland, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose- Leaf Covers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. 7
The invention relates to loose leaf covers, and has for its object to provide a device of this character formed from preferably a pliable heavy paper, and means for holding detachably a plurality of sheets of paper therein, for instance letters. The device is particularly adapted for holding correspond ence and forming a cover for the correspondence so that letters may be easily filed in a letter file. V
A further object is to provide the cover with spaced apertures adjacent the hinging seam thereof, through which apertures arms of a paper fastener eXtend and engage the upper sheet of paper within. the cover. The other arms of the fasteners engage the outer side of the'back of the cover, and the apertures allow the cover to be entirely opened which remains in place.
for exposing the letters to view.
A further object is to provide removable fasteners adjacent the ends of the cover, either of which fasteners may be easily removed, thereby allowing any of the letters to be entirely exposed to view by folding the letters diagonally towards the fastener A further object is to extend. the apertures past the hinging portion of the cover and into the adjacent side of the back of the cover, whereby the-connecting arms of the jaws of the fasteners will not interfere with the front and back of the cover opening into position in the same plane.
Vith the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the 'invent1on 7 may be made within the scope of what is Figure 1 is a perspective'view of cover showing the same closed.
I Figure 2 is a perspective view of the cover showing the sameopen.
j Figure 3is a detail bottom perspective view of one corner of the cover, showing the clip jaw engaging the back of the cover.
Figure at is a detail sectional view taken on line 44 of Figure 1.
- Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the cover, which cover is formed preferably from heavy paper of a flexible type, and is bent upon itself at 2 to form the frontcover 3 and the back cover 3". The cover is preferably adapted for holding a plurality of sheets of paper 4, for instance letters desired to be kept together, and filed in a conventional form of filing cabinet. Heretofore loose leaf covers have been provided with securing fasteners for letters, which fasteners extend through the cover and through apertures in the letters, however where conventional forms of covers are used, involving fasteners, the letters are mutilated and to remove a letter from the lower portion of the stack of letters, it becomes necessary to remove the upper letters from the fasteners, which involves considerable time. It has also been found where fastener covers are used, the cover sections, which form the front and back of the cover can not be straightened out to a position in the same plane. To obviate this difficulty, the front 3 of the cover is provided with T- shaped apertures 5, through which apertures the arms 6 of the paper clips 7 extend and engage the upper side of the upper sheet of paper 4 within the cover. The loops 8 of the clips 7 engage the outer side 9 of the back 3 of the cover and consequently the paper sheets l are securely clamped within the cover as a whole, however the top 3 of the cover may be opened to the position shown in Figure 2, where it will be in the same plane as the back 3 of the cover and consequently the top sheet 4 of paper is exposed for itsentire surface, and if the same is a letter, itwma'y be easilyread. It will also be seen that any of the sheets .4 may be pulled from the stack without removing the fastener '7,- thereby obviating the difficulty experienced with covers of this character 7 where fasteners are used which extend 1 through apertures in the sheets of paper. The transverse recesses 10 of the T-shaped apertures 5 receive the eyes 10 carried by the clip arm 6, when the front side3 of the cover is in closed position.
The apertures 5 are sufficiently long wherebyrtheir ends 11 extend beyond the hinging point 2 of the front and back of the cover, and into the adjacent side'of the back 3? of the cover, therefore it will be "seen; that when the front 5 of the cover is leaf coveris provided, which is simplein construction, will positively hold a plurallty of sheets of paper therein, 111 a manner whereby any of said sheets maybe removed without disturbing the other sheets, the cover will open entirely, andone wherein upon removal of one of the clips, for instance the lower clip, letters' within the file may folded diagonally towards the remaining shoulders for ment of the cli V signature. 7
