CLIP on FILE.

This invention relates to clips or tiles for letters, accounts, documents, and other papers, and the like, and which may also be used for loose leaf books and ledgers and the like.

)Vith reference to Figs 1 to 7, the clip or file is provided with a holder made of suitable springy metal. Said metal in the formation of the holder is bent to provide two over-lying portions 1 and 2 with curvated portion 3 which maybe furnished with openings 4 whereby the clip or file may be suspended on a nail 5 or the like (Fig. 4). The portions 1' and 2 are bent downwardlyas at 7 and 8 respectively and the extreme outer end of the portion 1 is also bent inwardly as at 9 from the portion 7 thereof. In the bent portion 9 are two or more openings 11 )Vhen the holder has been bent as described the portion 1 will. overlie the portion 2 and normally will lie upwardly therefrom. A slider keeper 10 may be fitted to the holder and adapted to slide on the portions 1 and 2' thereof whereby such portions 1 and 2 may be kept in proper relative position in relation to each other when the clip is being utilized for filing purposes.

Adapted to be associated with the said holder is a detachable binder deviceconsisting ofa metal plate provided with a back 12 and foot 13, the latter having two or more filing spikes 14. The back 12 is furnished with a tongue 15 having an opening 16 therein. Flanges 17 are also formed on the back 12 as well as clip nibs18. On the portion 2 of the holder is the tongue 19 which may be adapted to abut the tongue 15 of the binder device and to keep same associated with the portion 8 ot the holder when the binder device is assembled on the holder with the said portion 8 of the holder set under the clip nibs 18 (Fig. 4).

)Vhen papers or the like are to be filed on the clip the binder device is attached to the holder. A paper or papers or the like to be filed may then 116 Set (Fig. in rela; tion to the spikes 141, the portion 7 of the holder having been raised (Fig. 3) and the inturned end 9 abutting the flanges 17 of the binding device. Upon depressing the portion 1 of the holder the paper or the like 20 is forced onto the Spikes 14, the said paper or too like being automatically perforated by such spikes in such operation. The slider keeper 10 may then he slid into position on the holder to keep inturned end 9 of the holder in association with the spikes 1 1- (Fig. 1) to retain the filed paper .0 or a series thereof in position. After sufficient papers 2.0. or the like have been filed on the spikes 14 the binder device may be discharged from the holder by moving the portion 2 of the holder towards the portion 1 'thereof (Fig. 5) whereby the down-turned portion 8 of the portion 2 of the holder will be detached from the clip nibs 18 of thebinder device. If it should be desired to store the filed papers 20 r th like on the binder device the tips of the spikes 14 may be overturned on the said papers or the like (Fig. 7) and portions of the back 12 of the binder device may also be similarly oven turned (Figs. 6, and 7) while the tongue 15 of the binder device may if desired be attached to a nail or hook and suspended therefrom with its associated bound file of papers 20 or the like.

The file or Clip illustrated in Figs. 8 to 13 is identical with the file or clip illustrated in Figs. 1 to 7 with the exception that in the Figs. 8 to 13 the holder device is shown furnished. with a modified form of keeper slider 21 and the binder device is of modified construction. The keeper slider 21 is provided with an angularly bent po-rtion 22, the slider being thus designed to prevent it from becoming detached from the holder device. Said modified form ot binder device is illustrated in perspective view in Fig. 10; it is provided with a foot 23, back 24, clip tongue 25, file spikes 26 and stop flange 27. The tongue 25, spikes 26, and flange 27, are formed integral with the binder device. In the back 24 are the openings 28 and in the tongue 25 is an opening 29. In setting the modified form of binder device on the holder device. the portion 8 of the holder is set between the back 2% and the clip tongue 25 (Figs. 9 and 11) the flange 27 forming an abutment :tor the inturned end 9 of the portion 1 of the holder when such portion is raised upwardly as shown in Fig. 9. Storage binding of papers 20 or the like on the binder device may be effected by bending the binding device as illustrated in Figs. 12 and 13, the openings 28 serving to permit of ready bending of the back 24rfor such purpose. VVhen the portion 8 of the holder is being set be tween the back 2d and the clip tongue 25 the upper end of the tongue eventually enters and projects through the opening 30 in the portion of the holder, thusv retaining the binder device in association with the holder and consequently enabling registration of the openings 11 with the spikes 26.

It will be understood that one or more of the file or clip means above described may be attached to a base (not shown) for the purpose of providing a loose leat book or otherwise for carrying paper sheets or the like, the said book or the like being furnished if necessary with a hinged or other appropriate cover. 7

In certain cases the binder device may be made as a fixture to the holder device.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letter Patent is 1. A clip or file comprising a holder of springy metal bent to provide two portions overlying one another, downturned members on each said portions, an inturned end on one of said members with openings therein, a spike piercing device associated with the other said member adapted to serve as filing means, and means associated with said piercing device to limit movement of one of said overlying portions from the other of said portions. 7 r

A clip or file according to claim 1, in which the binder device is constructed with clip nibs adapted to be detacha-bly connected with one of the downturned members of the holder device, and one of the overlying portions of the holder is furnished with a tongue which may abutthe binder and keep it in association with the downturned member to which it is attached.

6. In and for a clip or file, a filing binder comprising a sheet of --metal bent to provide a foot with integral piercing spikes and with a back having flange stop means at its head and nib clips thereon adapted to allow detachable association of said binder with a holder therefor.

7. In a filing binder according to claim 6, the construction in which the back of the binder is furnished with a tongue adapted to be connected to a support whereby said binder will be suspendable.

8. In a filing binder according to claim 6, the construction in which portions of the back of the binder are foldable upon material set upon the said piercing spikes.

9. In and for a clip or file, a filing binder comprising a sheet of metal bent to provide a foot with integral piercing spikes and with a back having'fiange stop means at its head and an integral clip tongue adapted to allow detachable association of said binder with a holder therefor.

- 10. In a filing binder according to claim 9, the construction in which portions of the back of the binder are holed to permit ready folding of portionsof the said back upon material -set upon the said piercing spikes.

11. In a filing binder according to claim 9, the construction in which the integral clip tongue is holed to adapt the binder to be connected to a support whereby said binder will be suspendable.

12. The combination with a clip or file according to claim 1, of a keeper slider which is bent to encircle the overlying portions of the holder and is also angularly bent to provide an integral stop member to prevent disassociation of the keeper slider from the holder.
