Be it known that I, EDWARD C. Sucknar, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in rl`emporary Binders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompan ying drawings. f

This invention relates to improvements in temporary binders, and especially to that class of binders known as loose-leaf ledgers; and its object is to provide a very simple, cheap, and efficient construction having no detachable parts liable to become loose or broken and which is so arranged as to greatly facilitate the insertion and removal of the leaves.

A further object of the invention is to provide very simple and cheap means for detachably securing the covers of the back and to provide certain other new and useful features, all as more fully hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a perspective view of a device embodying the construction, showing the same in an open position with one of the covers removed. Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-section of the device through one 0f the spurs for securing the securing-strips which fasten the covers to the back. Fig. 3 is a similar section through one of the binding-lingers. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the securing-slide; Fig. a similar view of the securing-strip for the covers; and Fig. 6 is a perspective View of a slightly-modified form of binder, showing the same in position for the insertion of the leaves.

As shown in the drawings, A represents the covers, attached to the sheet-metal back B by providing suitable sheet-metal strips 1, which are inclosed in flexible strips of leather 2 or other suitable material secured to the edges of the covers to form flexible connections or hinges therefor, and these strips are secured to the side flanges 3 of the back B by striking up from each of said strips a series of prongs 4, which extend through the leather strip and through openings provided therefor in each of the said flanges and are bent down or clenched on the inner side thereof, thus providing cheap and efficient means for securely attaching the covers to the back in such a manner that they may be detached, if desired. The lower edge of each securing-strip is turned inward beneath the back to prevent the metal from contacting with the desk or table.

C represents the binding-fingers, each consisting of a solid rod provided near each end with a transverse opening' and curved throughout its length. The binding-fingers are pivotally secured at one end to one of the flanges 3 of the back by forming an inwardly-turned edge or eye 5 on the flange and cutting away portions of said eye to receive the ends of the binding-fingers and then running a suitable rod or pintle 6 through the eye and the openings in the binding-lingers. At their opposite ends the binding-fingers are detachably secured to the opposite flange 3 by aslide 7, formed of sheet metal and provided with integral longitudinally-extending fingers 8, adapted to be projected through the openings in the ends of the binding-fingers when the slide is moved longitudinally. Said slide is secured to the ange by turning or rolling the upper edge 9 of the flange over the upper edge of the slide to form a guide therefor and by providing the slide with longitudinal slots 10 and forining lugs 1l on said edge 9, which lugs are turned inward through the slots in the slide. Said slide is held in place and at the same time permitted to move longitudinally a limited distance to engage and disengage its iinlgers 8 with the openings in the binding-iingers to hold or release the same. One end of the slide is turned inward at l2 to form a finger-hold, by means of which it is operated.

In the modified construction of Fig. 6 the upper edge of one of the flanges 3 is formed by folding the metal inward and down upon itself, and the binding-fingers are rigidly secured at one end to this flange by riveting or otherwise securing the same in openings formed in said flange in a position to extend across between the flanges, and the opposite liange 13 is connected to the back by a hinge I4, formed by turning eyes on the edge of the back and flange and providing a pintle to engage said eyes. The leaves are therefore IOO released or inserted by moving the slide to disengage its lingers from the openings in the ends ofl the binding-fingers and then turning the flange 13 on its hinge out ofl the Way. The binding-lingers, being rigidly secured to the flange, greatly facilitates thev insertion or removal of' the leaves, as, by placing` the binding-lingers in the position shown in Fig. 6 With the same extending vertically, they are held rigidly in alinement and in the most convenient position for slipping the leaves in place thereon or removing the same.

The described manner of securing the covers to the back is cheap and permits the same to be readily detached and others substituted when they have become Worn or it is desired to change the markings on the book and by providing the slide for locking the bindinglingers, which is permanently attached to the back, there are no detachable parts liable to become lost, and the parts are all stamped from sheet metal.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a temporary binder, the combination with a back having side flanges, of a series of binding-lingers each having an opening at one end and attached at the opposite end to the flange at one side of the back, a slide provided with longitudinal slots, an edge on the flange at the opposite side ofthe back which is turned over the slide to form a guide therefor and provided with lugs extending` inward through the said slots to secure the slide to the flange,
