WILLIAM B. PEARSON, OF JACKSONVILLE, ILLINoIs.
TABLET-BINDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374.751, dated December 13, 1887,
Application filed March 10, 1887. Serial No. 230,398. g (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BRAMHAM PEARSON, of Jacksonville, in the county of Morgan and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Tablet-Binder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved form of tablet and its binder, the upper cover of the binder being represented as it appears when thrown back from the tablet. Fig. 2 is an edge View of the tablet and its binder, one cover of the binder being represented as it appears when thrown back from the tablet. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the binder, representing the movable clip as it appears when folded back to permit ot'the engagement of the fixed lug or ear with the slot or cut of the tablet. Fig. 4 is a View of the central portion of the binder, the movable ear being thrown back out of alignment with the metallic back; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the tablet proper. v
The binder illustrated in the drawings above referred to consists, essentially, of covers 10 and 11, that are united by a flexible back, 12, to which back there is riveted a metallic backing-strip, 13, one end of which is formed with a lug or ear, 14, the strip 13 being bent at about right angles at the point 2 and then again at about right angles at the point 3, so that the lug or ear 14 extends forward over the face of the back in a plane substantially parallel therewith. To the other end of the back 13 there is connected a folding clip, 15, which consists of a short strip of metal that is bent at about right angles at the points 4 and 5, connection between the parts being established by means of an eyelet or rivet, 16. The rivets or eyelets 17, which serve to connect the metal back-strip, 13, with the flexible back 12, also serve to hold side clips, 18,
in position, said side clips consisting of metallic strips having outturned ends which ex tend over the edges of the back-strip 13, as is clearly shown in the drawings.
In connection with such a binder as the one above described I employ a tablet, 20, made up of leaves that are united by binding-cords 21; or the tablets might be united in any other way desired. In the side edges of the tablet 20, at points near the end at which the leaves forming the tablet are bound together, I form cuts or slots 7, as is probably best shown in Fig. 5.
The tablet above described is associated with the binder, also above described, by bringing the lug or ear 14 into engagement with one of the slots or cuts 7, forcing the end of the tablet betweenthe extending ears of the clips 18, and then folding the clip 15 down to the position in which it is shown in Fig. 1, the retaining-ear of said clip at this time entering the other slot of the tablet.
From the construction described it will be seen that when a tablet is used up it may be replaced by another unused tablet, so that a single binder will answer as a backing for a number of tablets, fresh tablets being inserted as the old ones are filled or used up.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the covers and flexible back of a tablet-binder, of a metallic strip connected to the flexible back and formed with a lug or ear, 14, a folding clip, 15, and.
side clips, 18, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a tablet formed with side cuts or slots, of a binder formed of covers 10 and 11, that are united by a flexible back, a metallic strip connected to said back and formed with a fixed lug-or ear, 14, a folding clip, 15, and side clips, 18, substantially as described.
YVILLIAM B. PEARSON.
