To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES S. MCDONALD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders for Loose Leaves, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.

My invention relates to temporary binders for loose leaves, and its object is to provide a binder in which the covers are secured by metal hinges to the back without necessitating the cutting, shaping, or otherwise effecting the adjacent edges of the circular-shaped spring-clamp, which latter comprises the principal portion of the back of the book; substantially as hereinafter fully described, and as particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawingsz Figure 1 is a perspective view 1 of an open temporary binder having my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section through the same showing it closed. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the hinged back portion of the book. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section through the back portion of the book, drawn to its full scale. Fig. 5 is a similar view of a modified construction of 'my invention.

Referring to the drawings A A represent the covers of the temporary binder to which my improvements are applied. These covers have their rear edges suitably secured to the sheet metal plates B, B, of a hinge, the rear plate C of each of which extends back between the longitudinal edges of a slit cylindrical springclamp D. The knuckle b of these hinges is located immediately in front of the edges of the spring-clamp D, and the plates C, immediately back of the point where the edges of the clamp bear against them, are

provided with longitudinal ridges c on the side facing the inner circumference of the clamp. Said plates C separate from each other as they extend back and their rear edges come in contact with the inner circumference of the rear segment of said clamp, and are provided with tongues d. These tongues extend through suitable openings in the clamp, and have their extremities swaged or bent so as to clench the clamp and retain said plates in position, substantially as shown.

If desired the ridges 0 might be dispensed with; their presence is, however, desirable, in order to prevent the possibility of any displacement of the longitudinal edges of the clamp on the rear plates of the hinge.

The covers and the back (which latter is, principally composed of the clamp D), are covered with leather or other fabric in the usual manner, and in operation, when it is desired to use the binder either to permit of the insertion of leaves or to remove the same, the covers are bent back, as shown in Fig. 1, and pressed toward each other, thus making levers of the covers to separate the edges of the clamp, and provide an opening for the insertion of the leaves, substantially as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Upon the covers being released the edges of the spring-clamp will automatically close the rear plates of the hinge against each other, or, if there are leaves between the same, will cause said plates to clamp said leaves between them.

In Fig. 5 of the drawings I show a modified construction of my invention, which consists in making the rear plates E of the hinges conform to one-half of the inner circumference of the clamp F, and have their rear edges butt against each other, preferably, in the transaxial plane intersecting the meeting surfaces of the hinge when the clamp is closed. If desired, these rear edges of the rear plates E may be provided with tongues f, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5, which may be projected through openings in the clamp, substantially in the same manner as tongue (1' hereinbefore referrcd to, and swaged or bent so as to lap against the outer circumference of and clench the clamp. The operation of this modified form of my invention would be the same, substantially as that shown in the first four figures of the drawings, and it constitutes an equally desirable form of my invention as that first described.

What I claim as new is 1. A temporary loose leaf binder comprising covers, a sheet-metal longitudinally slit cylindrical spring clamp in the back of the binder, and sheet metal hinges to the forward plates of which said covers are secured and the rear plates of which are secured to said clamp.

2. A temporary loose leaf binder comprising covers, a sheet-metal longitudinally slit cylindrical spring-clamp in the back of the binder, and sheet-metal hinges to the forward plates of which said covers are secured, and the rear plates of which extend to and impinge against the rear segment of said spring-clamp.

3. A- temporary loose leaf binder comprising covers, a sheet-metal longitudinally slit cylindrical spring-clamp in the back of the binder, and sheet-metal hinges to the for Ward plates of which said covers are secured, and the rear plates of which extend to and are secured to the rear segment of said spring-clamp.

4. A temporary loose leaf binder comprising covers, a sheet-meta1 longitudinally slit cylindrical springcla1np in the back of the binder, and sheet-metal hinges to the forward plates of which said covers are secured, and the rear 5 plates of which extend between the longitudinal edges of the clamp and have their rear longitudinal edges provided with tongues that are adapted to pass through Openings in said clamp and rivet said plates thereto.

A temporary loose leaf binder comprising covers, a

10 sheet metal longitudinally slit cylindrical springclanip in the hack of the binder, and sheet-metal hinges to the for ward plates of which said covers are secured, and the rear plates of which pass through the slit portion of said clamp and are secured to the rear portion of said clamp.
