Wbzwwar W AM ns NORRIS PETERS cm, WASHINGTON, n. c,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
HERMAN WIEDEMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO J. S. MCDONALD COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
TEMPORARY BINDER FOR LOOSE LEAVES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 17, 1 907.
Application filed March 18. 1907. Serial No. 363,127.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN WIEDEMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Temporary Binder for Loose Leaves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to temporary bind- 10 ers for loose leaves and particularly that kind in which the back is inclosed within a suitably sha ed clamping spring.
The 0' ject of my invention is to provide a peculiarly constructed spring-back for temporary binders in which the covers are hinged to separable plates that are connected together in a very simple and effective manner so as to obtain a hinge-joint, without a intle, and that are clamped together by a suitable triangular-shaped spring that keeps the edges of the said plates to which the covers are hinged normally pressing towards each other. This Iaccomplish by the means hereinafter fully described and as particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings :Figure I is a perspective view of a temporary binder to which my improvements are applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the back denuded of the layers of fabric with which the completed binder is covered and showing a portion of the triangular spring broken away. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section thereof drawn to a larger scale.
In the drawings, A, A, represent the covers of a temporary binder to which my improve ments are applied. The rear edge of one of these covers is provided with knuckles which interspace between and are in axial alinement with corresponding knuckles made on and projecting from a hinge-plate B and are connected thereto by a suitable pintle c. The rear edge of the other cover A is similarly hinged to a hinge-plate C. I-Iingeplate B corresponds in width to the width of the binder, and it extends to the back of the book and its rear portion 1) is flanged upwards, preferably at a slightly acute angle thereto, parallel with the back edge of the binder. The upper edge of this flanged portion I) of said hinge-plate B is provided with one or more pockets or seats (Z, (Z, which are made by punching the metal forward a slight distance so as to obtain a sufiicient depression in the rear surface of the said flanged portion 6 into which fingers c projecting downwards from the rear edge of the other hinge-plate C enter. Hinge-plate O, preferably, corresponds in width to plate B and also in depth, but it is unprovided with a rear flanged portion similar to b.
When plates B and O are connected by seating the fingers c of plate O in the seats (I of plate B, the front hinged edges of said plate will rest against each other, and said plates are normally kept in this relative position by a spring-clamp D, which latter is, preferably, made of a single piece of highly tempered elastic sheet steel or other metal bent to a triangular shape in cross section, which is slid lengthwise over plates B and C and inoloses the same, with one lip or longitudinal edge bearing just to the rear of the forward hinged edge of one hinge-plate and the other lip -or longitudinal edge thereof 7 bearing against the other hinge-plate just back of its forward hinged edge.
hat I claim as new is:
1. A temporary binder for loose 'leaves comprising front and back covers, two hingeplates the rear portion of one of which is flanged transversely and the rear edges of both of which are removably articulated together and to one of which plates the rear edge of one cover is hinged, and a spring clamp adapted to inclose and normally press said spring-plates together.
2. A temporary binder for loose leaves comprising front and back covers, two hingeplates the rear portion of one of which is flanged transversely, and the rear edges of both of which are removably articulated together and to one of which plates the rear edge of one cover is hinged and to the other of which the rear edge of the other cover is'95 hinged, and a spring-clamp triangular in cross section and adapted to inclose and normally press said spring-plates together.
3. A temporary binder for loose leaves comprising front and back covers, two hinge plates the rear edge of one of which is pro vided with a depressed seat and the rear edge of the other with projecting fingers whereby said plates are removably articulated together and to one of which plates the rear edge of one cover is hinged and to the other of which the rear edge of the other cover is hinged, and a spring-clamp adapted to inclose and normally press said hingeplates together.
4. A temporary binder for loose leaves the rear edge of the other cover is hinged, comprising front and back covers, two hingeand a spring-clamp adapted to inclose and plates the rear portion of one of which is i normally press said spring-plates together. flanged transversely and is provided with In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 5 depressed seats in its rear surface, and the my hand and seal this 13th day of March, 15
