TEMPORARY BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN VIEDEMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a-resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tem orary Binders, of which the following is a ful clear, and eX- act description.
My invention relates to temporary holders for loose sheets, and particularly the kind that have one cover stiff throughout its length to furnish a suitable support for the -paper when written upon, and the other cover hinged in a suitable manner to the back portion of the same, so that it can be swung back out of the way without releasing the paper.
The object of my invention is to simplify and improve the construction of such a holder, and the clamping-spring therefor, so that the latter will be securely anchored in position and will not work loose and become detached no matter how wide the back of the holder is forced open, and will have its elasticity greatly increased.' This I accomplish by the means hereinafter fully described, and as particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings A represents what might be called the tablet of the holder, because in use the loose sheets are placed on this cover and rest thereon when written upon. This tablet consists of a rectangular plate of sheet metal of dimensions corresponding to the total area of the broad side of the holder, and its rear edge is curved or rolled upwards back over itself a short distance, and has its overhanging edge provided with knuckles a.
The upper cover comprises a forward and rear section; the forward section B consists of a flat sheet metal plate, which corresponds I in dimensions to the forward part of the under cover, and has its rear edge terminate a short distance from the back and provided with knuckles b, and connected by the short rear section C to the overhanging knuckled edge a of the tablet. The forward section of the upper cover is adapted to lay flat upon the tablet, or upon the loose sheets in the holder, and in order to make it do this, and at the same .time clamp the edges of the loose sheets `between the hinge connecting the two sections of the upper cover and the tablet,V I have provided a spring-clamp D, which consists of a strip of elastic sheet steel bent transversely its entire length so as to make its lower 4lapping portion much narrower than its upper lapping portion. The width of the upper lapping portion corresponds to the'distance between the back of the holder yand the hinge connecting the two sections of the upper cover, back of which latter its edge d bears, and the width of the lower lap of the spring is, preferably, slightly more than h alf that of the upper lap, and its edge e is seated in and bears upwards against a gutter or slight channel f made in the under side of the rear portionof the tablet of the holder adjacent to the upwardly bent rear portion thereof.
The curvature of the bend of the spring is of a slightly greater radius than the upwardly rolled rear portion of the tablet, and when in proper position it is slipped longitudinally over and incloses the rear rolled portion of said tablet and the rear section of the upper cover,'and when the forward section of the upper cover is bent back as far as it can go, and then pressed downwards, the hinge connecting the two sections is separated from the tablet and loose leaves may be inserted or removed from between them, and when the said forward section is released, the spring will automatically cause the said hinge to press upon and clamp said loose leaves against the tablet. As thus constructed a narrower strip of elastic sheet steel can be used in making the clampingspring and in view of the narrowness of the lower lapping portion thereof, and the secure hold it has on the tablet, the upper portion will have more elasticity.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3 the gutter or channel portion f of the back of the tablet is made just shallow enough to permit the short member e of the spring to lie flat against any plane surface upon which it rests and in the saine horizontal plane with that of said tablet. This construction gives Ithe back of the binder a neat, smooth appearance without any unnecessary indenta* What I claim as new is l. The combination with a loose leaf holder comprising an upper and lower cover suitably hinged together, of a spring-clamp consisting of a flexible sheet steel strip bent transversely its entire length and inclosing the rear portions of said covers, and having one of its lapping portions wider than the other.
2. The combination with a loose leaf holder comprising an upper and lower cover suitably hinged together and one of which is provided with a transverse channel, of a spring-clamp consisting of a flexible sheet steel strip bent transversely its entire length and inclosing the rear portions of said covers,
one of its lapping portions being wider than the other and one of said lapping portions having its edge engaging said channel.
3. A loose leaf holder comprising a tablet having its rear edge rolled upwards to form the back of the holder, an upper cover having a suitably hinged connectionl with said upwardly rolled edge, and a spring-clamp consisting of a flexible sheet steel strip bent transversely its entire length having its upper lapping portion wider than its lower lapping portion, and inclosing and normally pressing the rear hinged edge of said cover and the rear portion of the tablet together.
4. A loose leaf holder comprising a tablet having its rear edge rolled upwards and back over itself, an upper cover consisting of a cover section, and a back section which is hinged to the overhanging upwardly rolled rear edge of the tablet, and has the cover.

5. A loose leaf holder comprising a tablet having its rear edge rolled upwards and back over itself and having a transverse channel in its under surface near said rolled edge, an upper cover consisting of a cover section, and a back section which is hinged to the overhanging upwardly rolled rear edge of the tablet, and has the cover section hinged to its forward edge, and a spring clamp con sisting of a flexible sheet steel strip bent transversely its entire length, having one longitudinal edge seated in said channel and inclosing and normally pressing said back section and rear portion of the tablet together.
6. A loose leaf holder comprising a tablet having its rear edge rolled upwards and back over itself and having a transverse channel in its under surface near said rolled edge, an upper cover consisting of a cover section, and a back section which is hinged to the overhanging upwardly rolled rear edge of the tablet, and has the cover section hinged to its forward edge, and a spring-clamp consisting of a flexible sheet steel strip bent transversely its entire length, having its upper lapping portion wider than its lower lapping portion and the edge of the latter seated in said channel and inclosing and normally pressing said back section and rear portion of the tablet together.
