CHARLES E. BIRELEY AND GEORGE A. SIMMS', OF LOS ANGELES, CALI- FORNIA.
NEWS PAPER-FILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 628,430, dated July 4, 1899.
Application filed October 10, 1898. Serial No. 693,181. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES E. BIRELEY and GEORGE A. SIMMS, citizens of the United States, residing at Los Angeies, county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented a new and useful Newspaper-File, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention consists in certain novel features of construction hereinafter described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming apart hereof, which is a perspective view of our newspaper-file, partly broken away.
A is the base, on one end of which is the handle B, and on the other endis the offsetD, makin g, with the handle B, a recess of a depth sufficient to hold as many newspapers as it is desired to file temporarily. We have shown the base A, handle B, and offset D as integral. They may be made of separate parts suitably fastened together. Attached to the handle B and ofiset D by two hinges is the cover E, having open slots F, which register with the hollow impaling-pins H, affixed in and passing through the base A. The purpose of this construction is so that the cover E may be swung up and back to form a guide to show the proper distance at which the paper to be filed should be placed on the impaling-pins. The impaling-pins are hollow and pass through the base A, in which they are firmly fixed to permit of a needle and thread or other equivalent being run therethrough while the papers are on the impaling-pins, thereby enabling their being fastened together when removed from the'pins without disarrangement of their order and consequent loss of time to rearrange them. We have shown slots cut open to the front edge of the cover. The purpose of having these slots open is so that the cover can be opened afterthe papers are threaded.
Our file is preferably made with an even number of impaling-pins, so that the thread may be passed through the pins and have one thread to two pins, the loose ends projecting from the back of the base, and upon the removal of the papers from the pins the loose ends can be tied together, and thus bind the papers together.
On the side of the handle B is aifixed a flexible strip of metal M, having a hole 0 in the upper part, and in the edge of the cover E is aflixed a stud N, adapted to enter the hole 0 when the cover is closed down and fasten the cover from turning back from the base.
Having described our invention, what we claim is 1. A newspaper-file comprising a base having a recess for the reception of the papers to be filed, hollow upright impaling-pins fixed in and extending through the base the hollow therein extending through the pin, a cover hinged to the rear edge of the base having open slots in the front edge thereof adapted to register with the impaling-pins of the base, and to be swung back on the hinges transversely to the base and thereby form a guide for the insertion of the papers, and means for fastening the cover from accidentally opening.
2. The herein described newspaper file comprising the base A, handle B attached to one end of the base, offset D attached to the other end of the base, cover E pivotally attached to the rear edge of the handle B and ofiset D and having open slots F adapted to register with the impaling-pins in the base, hollow upright impaling-pins I-I fixed in and extending through the base, strip M having hole 0 affixed to the handle and stud N affixed to the cover adapted to enter the hole 0 and fasten the cover from turning back from the base when closed.
In witness that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto subscribed our names this 1st day of October, 1898, at Los Angeles, California.
