To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J OSEPH H. STEWART, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bluff City, in the county of Sullivan and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention has reference to temporary binders, the object thereof being to provide a device consisting of the outer covers, including back and side pieces, to which are rigidly connected a series of spring-clamps adapted to removably hold between the covers, pages or leaves, so that the device may be used either as a bill-file, newspaper-file, or temporary bind er for letters or copies thereof, which may be removed at pleasure without injuring or displacing the other sheets held between the jaws of the clamp.

My invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, 0 and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings,' forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side view of a temporary binder detached from the covers. Fig. 2 is a transverse section; Fig. 3, a detail perspective view of one of the ends of the temporary binder; and Fig. at is an end View of a book with the binder applied thereto.

The back and side covers A and A maybe 40 of ordinary construction, and to the back A are secured in the usual manner filling-strips a, to which one portion of the clamp is rigidly attached, either by stitching or using metallic fastening devices. These filling-pieces a, with the portion of the clamp which is secured thereto equal or exceed in thickness the thickness of they spring-jaws, connecting-rod, hinges, and spring.

p B refers to the strip which is secured tothe filling-pieces, and is provided at suitable intervals with perforations b, the outer edge being formed with loops 5', which are adapted to'embrace the rod C. At suitable intervals the strip Bis cut away or indented to provide a space for the hinges and springs.

D refers to the jaws of the clamp, the front edges of which are adapted to come in contact with each other, and said jaws are provided at suitable intervals with perforations d, through which may be passed metallic paper-fasteners when it is desired to. permanently hold the sheets between the jaws or clamps. The inner edges of the jaws or plates D have secured thereto leaves e e, which are perforated and when passed over the rod C form hinges.

F refers to coiled springs located upon the rod C, and the ends thereof bear. upon the outer edges of the curved spring-plates, so as to throw them together. The platesD at one end are provided with bent arms g, which are located near the inner edges, and when the outwardly-bent ends of these arms 9 are pressed toward each other it is evident that the spring plates or jaws will be separated or opened. When two springs are employed, the one farthest from the operating arms 9 is Weaker than the other, so as to insure the jaws opening to the same extent or parallel with each other.

The device hereinbefore described is simple and can be readily and cheaply manufactured, and the use thereof is so obvious that it is unnecessary to dwell thereon.

Heretofore it has been proposed to provide a temporary binder with a cover and back, within the same being located a single set of clamping-jaws, and though this construction is well adapted for some uses the construction of the clamp is such that it is impracticable to provide the-cover with more than a 5 single clamp, and in removing one or more sheets it will be necessary to loosen all the papers.

In addition to the uses mentioned my device provides a convenient means for classifying papers.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a paper-clamp or temporary binder, the combination, with the cover consisting of sides and back provided with filling-strips, of a clamp having a flat strip or member secured to the filling-strips, and springjaws secured to said fiat plate, a plurality of such clamps being secured between the covers, substantially as set forth.

2. In a file or temporary binder, a plurality of clamps secured within a common cover, spring-jaws hinged to the attachin g-stri p, and operating-arms with bent ends for opening the clamping-jaws, substantially as set forth.

3. In a file or temporary binder, a strip B, adapted to be secured to a back, said strip having eyes or loops through which passes a rod C, perforated leaves 6, pivoted to the rod and attached to the clampingjaws, and a spring or springs F for closing the jaws upon each other, the parts being constructed substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.

4. In combination with a cover or back, a metallic strip B, secured to said back, clamping-jaws hinged to said metallic strip, springs for closing said clamping-jaws upon each other, and operating-arms g, said clamps be- 1 ing arranged alternately within the covers, substantially as set forth.
