Description

tid
RALPH G. WHITLOCK, OF LOSANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
LOOSE-LEAF BOOK.
mensen..
Application led August 30, 1917.
To all w/wm t 'may concern.'
Be it known that l, RALPH G. WHrrLooK, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Books, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction of the back frame for a loose leaf book and in the manner of securing the same to the case or cover; and the object thereof is to provide a cheap and eflicient back frame that can be quickly attached to or detached from the case or cover.
In the drawings forming a part of this application Figure 1 is a front elevation of the back frame detached from the case with parts broken away.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the opening lever end.
Fig. 3 is a back elevation of the opening lever end of the cover back plate.
Fig. 4: is a back elevation of the other end of said plate.
Fig. y5 is an enlarged section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
lFig. 6 is an enlarged section on the line 66 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 7 is an enlarged section taken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 10 is a thin metal plate which. forms a portion of the back of lthe cover and is bound in the cover when it is manufactured. This plate I call the `cover back plate. Near each side and near the ends a portion of plate 10 is bent upwardly to form curved securing hooks 11 which engage the hooks of the back frame securing plates. The central portions of these upwardly bent portions project be vond hooks 11 yand form guide and stop lugs 13 which engage the side members 15 ot 'the back frame when the ring members 16 are fully opened to receive or remove leaves not shown, and guide the side members back to position when the ring members are closed. The back frame is composed of the side members 15 whose ends are bent at right an les to the body and flattened and pierce and pivotally con* nected by pintle rod 17. The ring members are rigidly connected to the side members and their Shanks extend upwardly and are Specification of Letters Patent.

pierced, and pintle rod 17 passes through these shanks. It. desired the Shanks could be omitted, but l prefer their use as they give additional strength to the back frame. The ring members are divided above the pintle rod as shown at 18. Spring wire 19 is coiled around the pintle rod and the ends bear against the side members and normally hold the ring members closed. The back frame securing plates 20 have their sides bent down and inwardly to form hooks 21 which engage hooks 11 oit' the back plate 10' and hold the back frame secured to the back plate. The central portions of the ends of plates 20 are bent downwardly to form stops 22 `which also limit the inward movement of the side members when the ring members are opened. At one end, preferably the lever opening end, the cover back plate has the central portion formed into a lock hook 23 which gives as the hooks of the back frame plate are pushed into the hooks of the cover back plate and snaps up behind one of stops 22 to hold the parts from separating as best shown in Fig. 7. If it should be desired to remove the back frame the lock hook can be depressed and the back fra-me slid out. Secured upon rod 17 near one end thereof is a tulcrum bar 24 on which bar is pivotally mounted an L-shaped lever 25 by means of which the body members may be caused to approach each other, thereby opening the ring members. In Fig. 5 l show a fragment of the cover of which 26 is the outer member and 27 is the lining.
By this construction it will be observed, I am able to manufacture the cover and back frame separately and can quickly unite the same and when desired can easily disunite them.
Having described my invention l claim:
1. The combination of a cover, having a metal back plate forming a part thereof, said back plate having hooks projecting upwardly from its inner face beyond the lining, said hooks being at the sides .of said plate and extending upwardly and inwardly and then outwardly; with a back frame having hooks to co-act with the hooks et the yrback plate to unite the cover and back frame.
2. In a loose leaf book, a cover comprising an outer member; a lining member; a metal back plate between said members, said wardly and inwardly and then outwardly;l
in combination With a back frame having attaching plates at each end thereof, saidv-`^ plates having hooks eo-aeting With the hooks of the back plate to secure the parts have'hereuntosubscribed my name this 25th 20 together. 3. In a loose leaf book, a cover having a metal back plate forming a part thereof,
said back plate having an upwardly pro Jeeting look hook, in Combination with a back frame havin" seeurinO lates )rovided with downwardly extending stops, one of 15 -s-aid stops being adapted to be engaged by the look hook to keep the parts from separating.
In Witness Ithat I elann the `foregoing I dayrof August 1917.
RALPH G. VVIIITLOCK.
