nmmlmmummn WITNESSES INVENTOR mv-ahr 0am ATTORNEY COLUMBIA PLANOGRAI'H CDuWASHINDTGN D c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTIN '1. OLSTAD, or ennzenronm, NEW YORK.
HOOK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN T. OLsTAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenport, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to books and more especially to detachable hooks where it may be necessary to disconnect ropes or cables with little delay and it consists of a hook having a perforation at one end and a removable section at one side in order to release the rope from the hook itself as will be more fully described in the following specification, set forth in the claim and illustrated in the drawings, wherein,-
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section, showing the hook closed. F ig. 2 is a side view showing the hook open.
The rigid section 5 of the hook is of ordinary construction and has an opening 6 at its lower end through which an eye 7 may be inserted and a rope secured about the eye.
One side 8 of the hook is removable so that a rope may be passed into the open space 9 when desired. This side 8 also has a perforation 10 to carry the ring 7 and its rope and the side 8 is provided with a passage in which is located a locking bolt 11 whose stem 12 is surrounded by a spring 13 and carries at its lower end a thumb piece 14;. The bolt 11 projects into a recess 15 of the over-hanging section of the hook and a projection 16 of the side 8 is perforated to fit over the nose 17 at the end of the hook and which is adapted to strengthen the side Specification of Letters Patent.

8 and relieve the bolt 11 from the entire strain.
Then the rope is to be inserted in the opening 9, the bolt 11 is retracted by means of the thumb piece 14 so that the side 8 may be swung outward as shown in Fig. 2 and the rope inserted. The movable side is then replaced and the nose 17 prevents swinging movement, while the eye 7 prevents the lateral movement of the movable side.
This construction provides a hook of considerable strength and few parts which are liable to become injured and get out of order.
It is obvious that the parts may be otherwise arranged or modified within the scope of the claim without departing from the essential features above described.
hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-
A hook comprising a member having a bill provided at its end with a recess, said member having at the side of the bill an outstanding nose one edge of which is in alinement with one edge portion of the recess, a side member having a perforation adapted to receive the said nose, and a spring pressed bolt mounted upon the side member and having an end portion normally disposed partially across the said perforation.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARTIN T. OLSTAD.
