CHRlSTINH S UNITED STATES PATENT onrion.
CHRISTINA SWANSON, F PORTLAND, OREGON, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN KOPF, OF PORTLAND,
OREGON.
HAT-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. n, 1917.
Application filed October 3, 1916. Serial No. 123,557.
. a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawin s.
Ihis invention relates to new and useful improvements in hat fasteners and more particularly'to a fastener which is carried by the hatso' that the same may be readily secured to the head of the wearer and is the same subject matter that was embodied in a formally allowed, forfeited,.and abandoned application which was filed by me on December 7, 1912, allowed May 22, 1918, and identified by Serial No. 735,502, the object of the invention being to provide a hat fastener which will replace the well known form of hat pin and which can be readily manipulated to secure the hat to the head of the wearer.
Another object of theinvention is to provide a hat fastener which will possess advantages in points of efiiciency and durability, is
the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view showing the device in its open position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the same in a closed position.
Fig. 3 is an enlar ed elevation illustrating the detachable en of one of the sections, and
Fig. 4 is an end elevation showing the device in its operative position in full lines and in an inoperative position in dotted lines.
Referring more particularly tothe drawings, 1 indicates the bOdy member of my improved hat fastener which comprises two semi-elliptical sections 2 and 3, each section being formed of a suitable length of wire which may be of any weight or size. Each section is provided at one end with apin portion 4 which is bent at substantially right angles to the body portion and havlng the screw threads 5 formed upon the outer end thereof, said pin portions being adapted to project through the side of the crown of the hat. A head member 6 is provided having an internally threaded bore 7 formed integral therewith and adapted to be threaded upon' the outer end of the pin portion 4 to securely fasten each section to the crown of the hat.
The ends of the sections 2 and 3 opposite the pin portion 4 are provided with the hook members 8 which are adapted to engage over the pin portions 4 adjacent the inner end thereof and be disposed upon the inner side of the crown of the hat so that each section will be pivotally mounted within the crown of the hat. It will be understood that the hook member formed upon the end of one of said sections will be engaged over the pin portion of the other section.
j The length of wire of which each section is formed is bent upon itself at various intervals to form a series of spaced inwardly projecting and downwardly curved hook members 9vwhich, when the sections are disposed in the position shown in Fig. 4, the hook members will, engage with the hair of the wearer. proved hat fastener, it will be understood that the device is previously appliedto the hat, the head member 6 being securely fastened upon the outer ends of the pin portions 4. When the wearer places the hat upon the head, it is simply necessary to turn the head members 6 and turn the sections 2 and 3 downwardly engaging the hook members 9 with the hair which will prevent the removal of the hat until the sections have been turned upwardly to their inoperative position as shown in Fig. 4. In removing the hat, it is only necessary to turn the head members 6 until the hooks 9 have been disengaged from the hair.
In the operation of my imends of the pin portions 4, it will be understood that these head members may be applied thereto in any suitable manner. It will also be apparent that the device as a Whole may be made of any suitable material desired.
While I have shoWnand described the preferred form of my invention, it WilL be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice Without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of two semi-elliptical sections, each section being provided upon one end With a pin portion adapted to be disposed through the crown of the hat, head members engaged upon the outer ends of the pin portions, the other ends of said sections being provided With a hook member to engage over the pin portions and spaced hook members carried by the body of the sections and adapted to engage the hair of the wearer to securely retain the hat in position.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of two semi-elliptical sections, hair engaging means carried by each of said sections, each section having a pin portion formed at one end and a hook member formed at the other end to engage over the pin portions to pivotally connect said sections.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of tWo semi-elliptical sections, pin portions formed upon one end of said sections, hook members formed upon the other ends of said sections and adapted to engage the pin portions to pivotally connect said sections, and spaced hook members carried by the body of the sections and adapted to engage the hair of the wearer.
consisting of tWo arcuate strands having their adjacent ends pivotally connected, the intermediate port-ions of the strands being bent upon themselves to form series of spacedhook members, each of said strands having an end portion extended to afford a pin, the pin of one strand being remote from the pin of the second strand.
6. A device of the character described consisting of tWo arcuate strands having their ad'acent ends pivotally connected, the interme iate portions of the strands being bent upon themselves to form series of spaced hook members, each of said strands having an end portion extended to afford a pin, the pin of one strand being remote from the pin of the second strand, and detachable head members coacting-vvith said pins.
In testimony Whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
CHRISTINA SWANSON.
